About The Position

We are seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to support the design and development of nuclear instrumentation and radiation detection systems used in demanding, high-reliability environments. This role serves as a key mechanical engineering resource responsible for driving design efforts, supporting product evolution, and ensuring long-term product performance and manufacturability. The position includes both system-level equipment (such as skid-based and piping assemblies) and component-level designs (including detector assemblies and rack-mounted instrumentation). This role is expected to become a key technical contributor within the mechanical engineering function and requires a high degree of technical ownership, sound engineering judgment, and the ability to contribute with minimal ramp-up. Prior nuclear experience is not required; candidates with strong mechanical design backgrounds and experience with fabricated equipment or welded assemblies will transition successfully.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
  • 5–10 years of experience in mechanical design, equipment design, or a similar engineering role.
  • Demonstrated experience creating P&IDs, mechanical drawings, and complete engineering design packages.
  • Strong proficiency with CREO and AutoCAD.
  • Experience developing and managing Bills of Material (BOMs) within a PLM or similar system.
  • Demonstrated ability to take designs from concept through release to manufacturing with minimal oversight.
  • Experience applying sound engineering design practices, including tolerance considerations, fit/function evaluation, and structured engineering change processes.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical systems, materials, fabrication processes, and welded structures, with working knowledge of applicable welding standards (such as ASME Section IX).
  • Ability to read and interpret complex technical specifications and drawings.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • U.S. citizen or citizen of a country to which there is no export restriction for controlled technologies.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally and work safely in industrial environments.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience designing industrial equipment, skid systems, piping assemblies, or precision mechanical components.
  • Experience working in a regulated industry (e.g., nuclear, aerospace, defense, oil & gas, or similar).
  • Experience with instrumentation layouts or integrated electro-mechanical systems.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and development of mechanical systems, components, and assemblies from concept through release to manufacturing.
  • Create and maintain Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) and detailed mechanical drawings.
  • Develop complete engineering design packages including models, drawings, specifications, and supporting documentation.
  • Generate and manage Bills of Material (BOMs) within PLM systems.
  • Lead design updates, component selection, and engineering change activities.
  • Apply sound engineering practices including tolerance considerations, fit/function evaluation, and design for manufacturability.
  • Incorporate fabrication and welding requirements into designs.
  • Collaborate with customers, manufacturing, quality, and supply chain teams to ensure efficient and practical solutions.
  • Interpret technical requirements and translate them into clear, production-ready documentation.
  • Provide engineering support to production and resolve complex design-related issues.
  • Maintain accurate configuration-controlled documentation.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to other engineers as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.
