About The Position

Blue Marble Communications is seeking a motivated individual to join our team as a Sr Mechanical Engineer. This role focuses on the design, analysis, integration, and test of complex electro-mechanical and opto-mechanical systems, including space-qualified flight hardware and ground support equipment. The ideal candidate brings deep technical expertise and strong problem-solving ability, capable of independently resolving complex design challenges and translating system requirements into robust, high-performance hardware solutions. About Blue Marble Communications Blue Marble Communications designs and manufactures high-performance RF, free-space optical, and network communications modules and systems for deployment onboard satellites and other space vehicles. Our current product offerings include software-defined RF, microwave, and millimeter-wave modem/transceivers; optical laser communications terminals, Ethernet routers/switches, and systems comprised of combinations of these modules. Requirements

  • BS in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field
  • Minimum 7-10 years of experience with design, analysis, and test of one of the following: ruggedized electronics, opto-mechanical systems, or precision mechanisms; ideal candidate would also have experience with designing flight hardware for space or airborne applications
  • System-level thinker comfortable engaging with customers, translating high-level requirements into concrete design constraints, and turning those requirements into functional designs
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks; ideal candidate would also have experience with structural and thermal finite element analysis tools, such as Ansys or Nastran
  • Produce detailed designs, tolerance analyses, and fabrication drawings suitable for flight hardware with strong knowledge of GD&T principles & techniques per ASME Y14.5
  • Perform and oversee structural, thermal, and environmental analyses to ensure hardware robustness under launch and operational environments
  • Highly proficient in Microsoft Office products (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Visio)
  • Excellent expository writing and oral presentation skills
  • Must be a US Person (This position has export control and security-related requirements that mandate attention to the citizenship status of any potential candidate and necessitates that the individual either be a United States Citizen, Permanent Resident of the United States, or lawfully admitted into the United States as a refugee or granted asylum by the United States Government.)

Responsibilities

  • Design of complex electro-mechanical and opto-mechanical systems, including ruggedized and precision hardware
  • Drives design decisions with a strong balance of performance, risk, cost, and manufacturability considerations
  • Owns the flow-down, implementation, and verification of requirements through design, analysis, test, and qualification
  • Translates customer and system-level requirements into clear subsystem requirements and actionable design constraints
  • Provides technical leadership, mentorship, and guidance to junior engineers
