About The Position

The Senior Manager, Origination leads a team responsible for the negotiation, structuring, and execution of resource-related contracts and the implementation of policies and programs related to the expansion and diversification of Tri-State’s resource portfolio. This role will engage directly in, and oversee the team responsible for, the negotiation, structuring, and execution of long-term sales agreements. This role is responsible for building and maintaining external relationships with current and potential counterparties in the region to facilitate potential business transactions. The successful candidate will work closely with other Energy Management leadership roles to originate power supply and sales contracts, and project-manage related deadlines. Senior Manager Origination Hiring Salary Range: $145,000-$224,000 Actual compensation offer to candidate may vary outside of the posted hiring salary range based upon work experience, education, and/or skill level. Responsibilities Oversee the development, negotiation, execution and administration of long-term power purchases and sales contracts, to maintain reliable and low-cost electric service to Tri-State members, including supporting evaluation of Electric Resource Plan resource bids. Structure economically favorable terms, conditions, and pricing for such transactions that reflect an understanding of transmission rights, Tri-State’s resource plan, generation fleet economics, wholesale and organized market operations, regulatory requirements, fuels and regional forward pricing, and existing long-term structured power sales and purchases. Lead a team in gathering and synthesizing cross-functional input to power purchase and sales contracts, working closely with departments such as Regulatory, Finance, Resource Planning, Power Supply, Merchant Transmission, Energy Markets, Generation, Transmission Planning and others. Oversee Tri-State’s responses to business development opportunities such as responding to other utility RFPs, issuing reverse RFPs, and working with other utilities or offtakers in a manner that results in favorable economic outcomes for Tri-State. Work closely with Member Systems on sale and purchase contracts, and power supply matters consistent with Tri-State’s wholesale contract and related policies. Ensure contractual mechanisms to measure and respond to system topology changes, enable deliverability to Member system load. Oversee the development and management of pricing tools to inform the successful financial structure of related contracts. Oversee and support FERC and other regulatory filings related to power purchases and structured transactions. Ensure department’s adherence with industry, state, and federal compliance programs. Oversee the recruitment, training, and development of department staff, including full-time originators and analysts. Requirements

  • BS/BA in Business, Engineering, or related discipline, or equivalent combination of experience and education.
  • Knowledge of commercial practices for bulk power transactions, settlements and scheduling.
  • Knowledge of generation technologies, including renewable and storage technologies, wholesale power markets, utility operations, and market design.
  • Ability to successfully negotiate complex and financially significant contracts involving power resources.
  • Ability to read, interpret and analyze power-related contracts to assess benefits and risks.
  • Ability to draft contractual language to propose and capture agreed-upon commercial terms.
  • Understanding of regulatory requirements as they relate to commercial agreement structures; and ability to analyze complex regulatory, financial and technical information and to develop related solutions.
  • Ability to delegate, coordinate, and manage efforts of staff to deliver on deadline-driven outcomes across a diverse set of projects.
  • Ability to make recommendations to leadership on complex contractual matters and proactively provide clear and timely updates to leadership on project status.
  • Ability to interact successfully with executive staff members at Tri-State, Member Systems, and third parties.
  • Extensive knowledge of regional markets and transmission systems, including the effects of organized wholesale power markets.
  • A minimum of ten (10) years of relevant experience involving long-term (defined as deals with durations of 18 months or longer) origination or contracts experience, including the successful development and execution of structured transactions.
  • Substantial knowledge of contract negotiation in utility, gas, electricity/power, or trading environments.
  • Substantial knowledge of power system operations.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of management experience.
  • Willingness to travel periodically as needed. (Must possess a valid driver’s license.)

Nice To Haves

  • Masters Degree preferred.
  • Five (5) years of experience in managing staff in completing complex, deadline-driven projects or initiatives.
  • Seven (7) years of experience in the electric power industry, with the acquisition of power supply resources preferred.
