About The Position
We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Manager, Health, Safety, & Environment at UL Research Institutes , based in our Evanston, IL office. The Senior Manager, Health, Safety, & Environment oversees the development, implementation, and management of comprehensive health and safety programs designed to create a safe and compliant research environment. This role ensures compliance with all relevant federal, state, and institutional safety regulations while promoting a culture of proactive risk management and employee well-being. The position relies on extensive expertise in occupational safety, industrial hygiene, and environmental health to identify, evaluate, and reduce workplace hazards within research operations. Requirements
- Solid understanding of occupational safety, industrial hygiene principles, and research environment safety standards.
- Proven ability to perform risk assessments and implement adequate hazard controls.
- Proven experience in leading safety investigations and promoting continuous improvement.
- Strong project management and organizational skills with the ability to handle multiple initiatives at once.
- Strong communication, training, and interpersonal skills.
- Possesses strong analytical and problem-solving skills to evaluate data and recognize trends.
- Ability to work effectively across multidisciplinary teams.
- Dedication to promoting a culture of safety and ongoing learning.
- Bachelor’s degree in the sciences, public health, or a related field.
- Minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible experience in safety or industrial hygiene roles.
- Certification (or eligibility) as a Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) is necessary.
- Proven experience in academic, federal, or pharmaceutical research environments.
- Comprehensive understanding of OSHA, EPA, NIH, and other safety regulations.
Nice To Haves
- Ph.D. preferred.
- Experience in developing and delivering safety training programs preferred.
- Familiarity with electronic safety management systems or databases is a plus.
Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and oversee safety and industrial hygiene programs customized for laboratory and research environments.
- Perform hazard and risk evaluations to identify potential exposures and suggest corrective measures.
- Ensure adherence to OSHA, EPA, NIH, and institutional safety and environmental standards.
- Lead and document incident investigations to ensure the completion of corrective and preventive actions.
- Conduct regular lab and facility inspections to identify hazards and ensure regulatory compliance.
- Review and approve laboratory safety plans, risk assessments, and standard operating procedures (SOPs) to ensure compliance with relevant regulations and guidelines.
- Provide expert consultation and training to staff and researchers on chemical hygiene, biosafety, and the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Develop and maintain health, safety, and environmental (HSE) protocols and documentation in accordance with regulatory and organizational standards.
- Work with research and operational teams to promote safety awareness and best practices.
- Mentor and guide junior safety personnel in technical and professional development.
- Stay up-to-date on emerging research safety trends, technologies, and regulatory changes, and implement best practices across your operations.
- May lead and/or actively participate in departmental or cross-functional initiatives.
