About The Position

Under the general direction of the Plant Manager, supervise and coordinate a wide variety of activities in the development and/or improvement of production methods, processes, machines, equipment, tooling and accessories for the manufacturing plant. Work closely with, and function in an advisory capacity to, Maintenance, Manufacturing management, Purchasing, Accounting, Quality Control, and others on matters of product design, improvement and manufacture, and cost reduction. Exercise overall direction over plant engineering and product engineering.

Requirements

  • Requires 4 years of experience in manufacturing technology, machine design, and solving engineering problems; technical knowledge to train and develop engineers; perform engineering economy (feasibility) studies; and, plant/facilities construction, alterations and maintenance. Knowledge of this type is usually obtained from comprehensive engineering courses. Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or related engineering degree is required.
  • Requires 4 years of experience in understanding product design, tooling, production methods, and application of engineering concepts. Must have ability to coordinate various projects in the development and selection of equipment, cost analysis, improvement of products, and manufacturing processes. Experience in lean manufacturing, quality improvement, and 5S methodology is required.
  • Strong verbal & written communication skills.
  • Strong detail orientation with the ability to work with all vendors is a must.
  • Comfortable representing the company in a professional manner on international standards development committees and before strategic partners and OEM customers.
  • Experience as a technical lead for teams consisting of 5+ engineers & maintenance personnel.
  • Requires a high degree of ingenuity and initiative in product design, analyzing manufacturing problems, selection of procedures, assigning projects and following through on assignments. Requires use of sound judgment in coordinating departmental activities to obtain best solutions and desired results. Wrong decisions in the selection of equipment and methods may result in significant production delays and may have effect on management decisions as well as monetary losses.
  • Original and skillfully written reports and communications involving explanations of technical and financial aspects of engineering manufacturing problems are required. High degree of skill in organizing and presenting written data is essential.
  • A high degree of sustained concentration routinely required in planning work assignments and in solving complex engineering, facilities maintenance and manufacturing problems.
  • Heavy work assignments with imposition of deadlines and interruptions will occur in this job.
  • Frequently required to spend time in production departments with exposure to shop conditions. Part of the workday is spent under office-type conditions. Occasional travel to vendor locations is necessary.
  • MS Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Access)

Nice To Haves

  • A proven record of success in coordinating product development projects is a plus.
  • A clear understanding of the consumer products is desirable.
  • Fiber experience is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise directly and/or through the plant, process engineers, facilities maintenance group, and other subordinates, engineering studies and investigations; machine, equipment, and tool design; process development, maintaining specifications; materials handling design; equipment and plant layout; machine procurement; and machine and equipment repair. Direct various functions concerned with cost reduction and improvement of operating efficiency throughout the plant.
  • Make major feasibility studies on the procurement of machines, equipment, tooling and plant facilities. Recommend capital expenditures for major items through comprehensive reports, proposals and verbal presentations. Determine areas for cost reduction in conjunction with the Plant Manager. Conduct investigations on new or improved methods, processes and equipment.
  • Direct process engineering in planning for the manufacture of products under development or products undergoing major change. Make recommendations regarding product design from the standpoint of manufacturing engineering. Assign project or task responsibilities and supervise the design and/or procurement of machines, equipment and tooling required for the production of new and revised products. Continuously review the progress on all projects to ensure that all machines, equipment, tooling and facilities are available in time to meet established production target dates.
  • Inspect proposed machines, equipment and tooling at vendor’s plants, trade shows or at other companies prior to approval for purchase.
  • Exercise responsibility & direction for effective repair and maintenance of all machines and plant equipment. Ensure timely repair and maintenance to meet production schedules. Fiber experience is a plus.
  • Exercise responsibility for the preparation of the departmental budget. Prepare plans for staffing to meet both long and short-term requirements for engineering & facility maintenance services.
  • Hire personnel for or appoint present qualified employees to specific positions within the limits of the approved basic Engineering organization structures and Maintenance Facilities in accordance with established policies.
  • Direct all functions relating to plant engineering, facilities construction, maintenance activities & make feasibility studies on major projects such as plant/facilities additions or alterations.
  • Participate in specific OSHA functions. Ensure that safety is designed and built into products, machines, processes, equipment and facilities. Ensure compliance with applicable regulations from the technical and engineering standpoint.
