About The Position

The City of Folsom's Public Works Department is currently recruiting for a Senior Maintenance Worker to join the Streets Division. The ideal candidate will possess strong streets/roadways maintenance and construction experience as well as experience with storm drain maintenance management. The ideal candidate will also be a strong leader and have experience mentoring and training lower-level staff; and posses experience working with an online work-order system. This position will be Monday - Friday from 5:30am -2:00pm. Once the incumbent has passed probation, the schedule will switch to Monday - Thursday 5:30am - 4:00pm. Under the general supervision of the Streets Operations Supervisor, the Senior Maintenance Worker will lead, assist, and schedule a crew in general maintenance activities, including semi-skilled construction and maintenance of streets and roadways; or specialized maintenance. This position will include driving heavy equipment requiring a Class A or B license on a continuous basis, and fertilization and/or pesticide spraying. Incumbents may oversee, monitor, and/or direct the work of lower level personnel. The Senior Maintenance Worker is the lead level in the Maintenance Worker series. Incumbents provide direction to lower level staff including assigning, directing, and reviewing the work of staff. Positions at this level are distinguished from those in the lower classification of Maintenance Specialist by performing lead work. This class is distinguished from the class of Senior Maintenance Specialist in that the latter performs a variety of skilled work in a specific area of expertise requiring special licenses and/or certification for a preponderance of the time. This position is non-exempt and part of the Local 39 IUOE union.

Requirements

  • Methods and techniques of carpentry, masonry, plumbing, electrical, concrete, and related craft trades used in the maintenance and repair of parks, asphalt, or crack sealing depending on assigned department.
  • Principles, practices, tools, materials, and techniques specific to the assigned are of specialty.
  • Safe and effective use of hand and power tools.
  • Basic principles and practices of managing, planning, and scheduling work.
  • Safe work practices.
  • Various equipment used in refuse collection and maintenance of aquatic centers/pools, grounds, parks, streets, and/or other facilities.
  • Basic math.
  • Basic word processing, spreadsheets, and database software.
  • The operation and minor maintenance of a variety of hand and power tools, vehicles, and light to heavy power equipment.
  • Occupational hazards and safety equipment and practices related to the work, including the handling of hazardous chemicals.
  • Applicable federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations.
  • English usage, spelling, vocabulary, grammar, and punctuation.
  • Techniques for providing a high level of customer service by effectively dealing with the public, vendors, contracts, and City staff.
  • Use tact, initiative, prudence, and independent judgment within general policy, procedural, and legal guidelines.
  • Oversee a crew of workers performing general or specialized maintenance.
  • Troubleshoot and repair faulty aquatic features, irrigation valves, sprinklers, controllers, or sidewalk or street distresses, depending on assigned department.
  • Implement and maintain traffic control plans.
  • Plan and schedule work routes.
  • Operate power tools and motorized equipment used in park maintenance, equipment used in refuse collection, or streets maintenance.
  • Maintain various records of work accomplished and prepare summary reports of activities.

  • Effectively communicate verbally and in writing.
  • Safely and effectively use and operate hand tools, mechanical equipment, power tools, and light to heavy equipment required for the work.

  • Maintain accurate logs, records, and basic written records of work performed.
  • High School Diploma, G.E.D, or equivalent to the completion of the 12th grade.
  • One (1) year of full-time experience as a Maintenance Specialist with the City of Folsom in the designated functional area (grounds and park maintenance; irrigation systems; the aquatic facility; and/or streets maintenance).
  • Two (2) years of full-time experience as a Refuse Driver with the City of Folsom.
  • Three (3) years of full-time experience performing general maintenance work in the designated functional area (grounds and park maintenance; refuse collection; irrigation systems; aquatic centers/pools; streets maintenance, and/or heavy equipment operation).
  • Must be willing to work weekends, holidays, and on-call when scheduled.
  • Upon reasonable notice, incumbent may be required to adjust daily schedule based upon seasonal operation demands.

Responsibilities

  • Performs a wide range of maintenance and repair duties including parks, parkways, landscaped corridors, medians, swimming pools, aquatic center(s), splash pads, water features, sports fields, public restrooms, streets, roadways, drainage systems, bridges and open spaces, depending on assigned department.
  • Assist crew members in the use of hand and power tools.
  • Oversee general and specialized maintenance work performed by lower level personnel.
  • Plan, oversee, and coordinate set up and break down of special events.
  • Respond to customer complaints and determine customers' needs.
  • Monitor, maintain, and purchases materials, tools, parts, and equipment as needed and assigned.
  • Purchase tools and supplies from local sources.
  • Maintain various records, reports, and correspondence.
  • Train new employees in operation of various equipment.
  • May apply herbicides, pesticides, and fertilizers.
  • Install pipe and plumbing fixtures.
  • Act as contact person when working with various crews.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
  • Establish standby list and coordinate schedule with staff
  • Identify necessary tasks and assign responsibilities to appropriate staff.
  • Identify additional training opportunities for staff development and compliance.
  • Ensure compliance with California Department of Agriculture regulations for herbicide application and required training.
  • Estimate and quantify required materials for maintenance activities.
  • Maintain current Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for all chemicals used in accordance with regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure all assigned work is accurately documented in the work order system.
  • Ensure staff properly maintain and safely store equipment.
