About The Position

The City of Port Townsend is recruiting for one opening in the Streets/Stormwater/Sewer division of Public Works. The vacancy will be filled at the Maintenance Worker, Operator I, or Operator II level depending on qualifications. CDL strongly preferred. Complete job descriptions are available here . JOB SUMMARY Under general supervision performs a variety of maintenance and repair work to streets, sewer, and storm water systems. Participates as a member of the Streets/Sewer/Stormwater team to perform heavy construction work for a variety of road, stormwater, and sewer construction and maintenance operations Performs minor repairs on equipment and report the need for major repairs Operates heavy construction equipment including backhoe, sweepers, front-end loader, dump trucks, bucket truck, vactor truck, etc., and operates hand tools such as chain saws, trimers, compactors, jack hammers, etc., as qualified Transports equipment with dump trucks and pickups with trailers Performs landscaping within the right-of-way Performs additional construction and maintenance tasks such as vegetation control, striping, signing, sewer and stormwater system cleaning, garbage control, right of way maintenance, sweeping, snow removal, pothole patching, special projects, and other duties as assigned Assists with preventive maintenance program of equipment in coordination with the Equipment Rental Division Assists with establishing and implementing appropriate safety programs for staff and equipment. Other duties as assigned Maintenance Worker 2025 base pay range: $27.22-31.13 2025 total pay range: $27.22-31.13 (includes maximum potential longevity pay) 2026 base pay range: $27.98-32.00 Minimum Requirements Graduation from high school or G.E.D. Valid Washington State Driver's license and ability to maintain a driving record acceptable to the City's insurance carrier. One (1) year as a streets, stormwater, or sewer apprentice or equivalent relevant experience. First Aid/CPR certification or must obtain within 12 months in this position. Traffic Control and Flagging certification or must obtain within six months in this position. Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A or must obtain within 12 months of employment in this classification. Preferred Qualifications Experience working with construction equipment Current flaggers card Current CDL Class A strongly preferred Current First Aid/CPR certification 2+ years' experience working in construction or related field Operator I 2025 base pay range: $33.11-37.47 2025 total pay range: $33.11-41.97 (includes maximum potential longevity pay) 2026 base pay range: $34.04-38.52 Minimum Requirements Graduation from high school or G.E.D. Valid Washington State Driver's license and ability to maintain a driving record acceptable to the City's insurance authority. 3+ years in construction running heavy equipment. First Aid/CPR certification or must obtain within 12 months in this position. Traffic Control and Flagging certification or must obtain within six months in this position. Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A or must obtain within 12 months of employment in this classification. Preferred Qualifications Experience working with construction equipment Current flaggers card Current CDL Class A Current First Aid/CPR certification 5+ years' experience working in construction or related field Operator II 2025 base pay range: $35.46-40.28 2025 total pay range: $35.46-45.11 (includes maximum potential longevity pay) 2026 base pay range: $36.46-41.41 Minimum Requirements Graduation from high school or G.E.D. Valid Washington State Driver's license and ability to maintain a driving record acceptable to the City's insurance carrier. 8+ years' operating construction equipment associated with street repairs, sewer and stormwater maintenance and installation. First Aid/CPR certification or must obtain within 12 months in this position. Traffic Control and Flagging certification or must obtain within six months in this position. Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A or must obtain within 12 months of employment in this classification. Preferred Qualifications Experience working with construction equipment Current flaggers card Current CDL Class A Current First Aid/CPR certification 3+ years' experience as a job site superintendent WORKING CONDITIONS This position requires being onsite working in the field primarily in the outdoors during all types of weather; repeated walking, bending, stooping, and lifting ; the ability to occasionally lift up to 60 lbs.; vision and hearing at level required to perform essential functions (may be corrected); and a full range of motor skills.
