About The Position

The Town of Fort Myers Beach is hiring a Maintenance Worker I - Streets to help maintain and repair streets, sidewalks, right-of-ways, and public spaces. This role is essential to keeping our community safe, clean, and welcoming. We're looking for someone dependable, safety-minded, and motivated, with experience in general maintenance, grounds work, or operating tools and equipment. This position performs skilled and semi-skilled work related to the maintenance, repair, and general upkeep of Town streets, sidewalks, signage, and related infrastructure. Work includes operating equipment, conducting preventative maintenance, and ensuring safe and accessible roadways for the community. Employees in this role may also be assigned general maintenance tasks beyond streets as directed.

Requirements

  • High school diploma/GED; one (1) year of experience working in maintenance and/or related fields.
  • Must possess a valid state driver's license and obtain a valid Florida Driver's License within thirty (30) days of hire or promotion.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local laws, regulations, ordinances, resolutions, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of basic groundskeeping, housekeeping and building maintenance practices.
  • Knowledge of how to use and apply paints, sealers, and stains properly.
  • Knowledge and application of safety standards and precautions pertaining to the use of tools and equipment.
  • Knowledge of the techniques and procedures used in streets, grounds, and facility repair and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards, safety precautions and personal protective equipment observed in the trade(s) of assignment.
  • Ability to operate service vehicles, including pickup trucks, utility vehicles, riding lawnmowers, etc.
  • Ability to safely operate motorized tools, manual tools, and light equipment such as lawnmowers, weed eaters, saws, drills, augers, tillers, compactors, and emergency generators.
  • Ability to read and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to utilize a variety of modern office equipment and operate a computer as necessary.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with other employees and the general public.
  • Ability to work outdoors often during extreme weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, etc.).
  • Ability to work independently or with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to handle a multitude of diverse tasks simultaneously while maintaining an attention to detail for the purpose of ensuring accuracy in task performance.
  • Ability to draw valid conclusions in task processing and prioritization.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide, calculate decimals and percentages and compute discount, ratio and proportion and profit and loss.
  • Ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape, and visually read various types of information.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, other employees and the public.

Responsibilities

  • Performs routine maintenance, repair, and cleaning of Town streets, sidewalks, rights-of-way, and road shoulders.
  • Assists with asphalt and pavement repairs, pothole patching, curb and gutter maintenance, and sidewalk replacement.
  • Installs, repairs, and maintains traffic and street signs; paints pavement markings and crosswalks.
  • Collects and removes litter, debris, and obstructions from roadways, sidewalks, storm drains, and rights-of-way.
  • Trims vegetation, removes weeds, and performs brush clearing along streets, sidewalks, and stormwater ditches to maintain visibility and drainage.
  • Assists with stormwater system maintenance, including clearing inlets, drains, culverts, and ditches.
  • Prepares for and participates in storm and hurricane response, including debris removal and emergency road clearance.
  • Safely operates light and heavy equipment such as dump trucks, loaders, compactors, mowers, and hand/power tools in support of street maintenance projects.
  • Performs routine inspections and preventative maintenance on assigned vehicles, tools, and equipment; reports needed repairs to supervisor.
  • Monitors inventory of supplies, equipment, and materials; assists with ordering and tracking replacements.
  • Follows all safety procedures and uses appropriate personal protective equipment at all times.
  • Completes required documentation, logs, and reports for daily operations and vehicle usage.
  • Provides support to Town-wide Public Works activities and may assist with facilities, parks, or grounds maintenance and project tasks as assigned.
  • Report maintenance issues, damage, or safety concerns to supervisors for prompt resolution.
  • Collaborate with other maintenance workers, departments, and agencies to complete tasks efficiently and effectively.
  • Assist with Town-wide Public Works requests to include night and weekend support for meetings and events.
  • Performs weekend and holiday work as assigned.
  • Attend all required training for operations.
  • Attend all assigned meetings.
  • Operates a motor vehicle in performance of assigned tasks as directed.
  • Performs emergency response tasks and assignments as directed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
