About The Position

This position provides comprehensive housing counseling services to adverse client base, including prospective homebuyers, renters, landlords, and current homeowners. This role offers support, guidance, and education to help clients navigate various housing challenges such as budgeting, rental housing, homeownership, foreclosure prevention and property maintenance. The Senior Housing Counselor will engage in one-on-one counseling deliver workshops to empower clients to make informed decisions and achieve housing stability.

Requirements

  • High school diploma (required); associate’s degree or higher (preferred).
  • Certified housing counselor with Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and NeighborWorks Center for Homeownership Education and Counseling (NCHEC) certifications.
  • 5+ years of experience in housing management, banking, or case management.
  • Non-profit experience and knowledge of local, state, and federal service programs.
  • Proficiency in Outlook, Excel, Word, Publisher, PowerPoint, and CounselorMax.
  • Strong knowledge of rental contracts, property, and anti-discrimination laws.
  • Effective bilingual communication skills preferred; strong verbal and written communication required.
  • Advanced problem-solving, customer service, and interpersonal skills.
  • Detail-oriented with the ability to facilitate grants and interpret program objectives.
  • Decision-making autonomy and adaptability to follow or adjust procedures as needed.
  • Ability to assess and improve processes; analytical skills to interpret information and determine appropriate responses.
  • Position requires automobile, driver’s license and insurance.

Responsibilities

  • Client Assessment and Counseling: Assess clients' financial and housing situations to provide personalized guidance on topics such as homebuying, renting, property management, and foreclosure prevention. Develop action plans to address individual needs, including improving financial health, creating budgets, and credit counseling.
  • Program Assistance and Referrals: Guide clients through the process of applying for housing programs, including mortgage assistance, rental subsidies, homebuyer grants, and property improvement resources. Provide referrals to legal services or external support when necessary.
  • Financial Education: Analyze clients' financial information, including credit reports, and provide coaching on financial wellness, budgeting, and savings strategies. Offer recommendations to improve clients' long-term financial stability.
  • Workshops and Training: Develop and deliver educational workshops on a wide range of topics, such as financial literacy, homeownership, rental housing, tenant/landlord rights and responsibilities, and foreclosure prevention. Present information to both clients and community groups.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Collaborate with banks, lenders, attorneys, and government agencies to assist clients with housing challenges, including negotiating with lenders on foreclosure or loss mitigation efforts and working with courts or municipalities on housing-related issues.
  • Housing Market Expertise: Maintain knowledge of the local housing market, including affordable rental options, homeownership opportunities, and financial assistance programs. Stay informed on regulations and compliance requirements for housing programs.
  • Data Management and Reporting: Maintain accurate client records, track program participation, and enter data into the counseling system. Prepare reports for grants, funding programs, and compliance requirements.
  • Outreach and Community Engagement: Conduct outreach to landlords, tenants, and homeowners to promote housing stability, provide technical assistance, and offer resources to improve housing conditions. Engage with community partners and networks to expand access to housing resources.
