About The Position

The Team: General Motors is at the forefront of the transformation of automotive with the electrification of our portfolio and the development of Industry-leading display solutions. Our Advanced Display Hardware Development team is a dynamic, high-energy, and innovative group focused on developing designs of next generation display modules. The team is responsible for developing the electrical and mechanical design of the display modules and also reviewing and approving production display module design changes. We are seeking a high-performing Senior Hardware Engineer interested in leading the in-house development of GM display module backlight unit designs. You will be responsible for the electrical and mechanical design, development, analysis, and review of the display module with a focus on the backlight unit, for our next generation SDV (Software Defined Vehicle) architecture. You will be depended upon to build strong partnerships with internal and external customers. The Display Module Hardware Design team’s mission is to ensure our products are designed to target the growing needs of our customers while ensuring robust, well-designed hardware which meets GM specifications and testing requirements from early hardware through production design. The Role: In this role you will be responsible for leading the display module backlight unit development and integration activities. This will include utilizing engineering tools and processes to successfully develop the backlight unit components and systems for vehicle programs. The Sr. Hardware Engineer would be responsible to develop various display module backlight unit designs for existing and new architecture-based modules, and collaborate with Optical, Electrical, and ECAD engineers, run simulations, participate in design direction meetings, and create a collaborative environment with internal and external team members.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering.
  • 7+ Year of engineering experience in design and development of styled electronics with backlight features.
  • Professional experience creating digital/analog HW interfaces including schematic creation, simulation & supportive documentation.
  • Proficiency in electrical analysis tools for circuit simulation, power distribution, and system performance evaluation.
  • Exceptional collaboration and teamwork skills; demonstrated ability for working across functional and organizational boundaries.
  • Hands-on experience engaging with manufactures of optical and electrical components.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree/PhD in Electrical/Mechanical Engineering.
  • Previous industry experience with infotainment, telematics or connectivity.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical fixation methods, vibration behavior, and structural analysis.
  • Knowledge of optical architecture and thermal solutions.
  • Experience with display panel suppliers.

Responsibilities

  • Create and optimize the structural layout and mechanical design of display module backlight units to meet performance, manufacturability, and reliability requirements.
  • Select the appropriate technology and process for the display module backlight unit.
  • Define electrical and mechanical design strategies and best practices for the backlight unit.
  • Lead the execution of electrical and mechanical design activities in alignment with program timelines to achieve successful product launches.
  • Collaborate closely with electrical and optical design team to integrate components into cohesive electro-mechanical systems.
  • Perform detailed mechanical design calculations, GD&T, and tolerance stack.
  • Create / lead / verify the layout design by conducting design rule checks (DRC) and design for manufacturability (DFM) checks. This ensures that the design meets the required specifications, constraints, and manufacturing capabilities.
  • Create and manage 3D and 2D CAD models, and lead CAD design reviews with cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Collaborate closely with electrical and optical design team to integrate components into cohesive electro-mechanical systems.
  • Develop analysis and test plans for new designs and implement virtual analytical models.
  • Lead prototypes build and testing activities, analyze test data, and implement design adjustments as required.
  • Support root cause analysis and develop corrective solutions based on virtual simulations and/or physical test results.
  • Support ECAD librarians by ensuring development of ECAD library parts meet PCBA Design for Manufacturing (DFM) & GM resiliency requirements.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvements, cost reduction, and quality enhancement in the display module backlight unit manufacturing.
  • Develop and implement virtualization technologies to accelerate and de-risk product development across programs.
