About The Position

Overview: The General Accounting Senior Finance Manager will lead a team of professionals who are responsible for supporting the General Accounting group, intercompany, and close activities for the Controllers department. Contributes to strategic direction/execution in the General Accounting group, Controllers department and bank, as well as resolution of complex problems. Works closely with the Accounting Operations, Specialized Accounting, Reporting groups, as well as other Finance division leads. The General Accounting group is a highly dynamic area, given recent implementation of a new general ledger and supporting technology and people infrastructure. Primary Responsibilities: Lead a team of analysts who are responsible for operations supporting the General Accounting group, intercompany, and close activities for the Controllers department. Makes recommendations and decisions to business line and operations' managers regarding accounting policies and interpretations thereof. Manages the operations for various monthly and quarterly processes. Applies comprehensive knowledge to decisions on these processes. Exercise usual authority of a manager concerning staffing, performance appraisals, promotions, salary recommendations, performance management and terminations. Understand and adhere to the Company’s risk and regulatory standards, policies and controls in accordance with the Company’s Risk Appetite. Design, implement, maintain and enhance internal controls to mitigate risk on an ongoing basis. Identify risk-related issues needing escalation to management. Promote an environment that supports belonging and reflects the M&T Bank brand. Maintain M&T internal control standards, including timely implementation of internal and external audit points together with any issues raised by external regulators as applicable. Complete other related duties as assigned. Supervisory/ Managerial Responsibilities: Manages subordinate managers. Full supervisory, development of team through professional leadership. Possess ability to direct/persuade/influence across division and peers throughout the bank

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and a minimum 9 years’ experience in Finance, Business or a related field with 3 years’ managerial experience or in lieu of a degree, a combined minimum of 13 years’ higher education and/or work experience with 3 years’ managerial experience
  • Strong organization skills with emphasis placed on detail and the ability to work effectively under time constraints
  • Strong analytical ability and creative problem-solving skills, including knowledge and application of GAAP
  • Demonstrated accuracy and timeliness
  • Demonstrated team work leadership
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • In-depth knowledge of the banking industry and related GAAP principles
  • Strong interpersonal skills and maturity to build relationships and interact from a business as well as a technical standpoint

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced degree in Finance, Accounting, or Business Administration or CMA
  • Experience in financial planning and analysis, accounting, strategic planning with financial services industry
