About The Position

ArtCenter College of Design is searching for an experienced Senior Exhibitions and Graphic Designer to join our team. The mission of the Hoffmitz Milken Center for Typography is to set the standard of excellence in typography education; elevate and advance the teaching and understanding of both letterform design and typographic practice; provide valuable support and service to the educational and professional communities, reinforcing the meaning and value of typography; and to honor the past and anticipate the future of typography in a society of rapidly changing visual communication methods. Under supervision of the Creative Director, the Senior Exhibitions and Graphic Designer will assist with conceptualizing, designing, and producing exhibitions for all HMCT venues, overall branding and social media, and will be responsible for maintenance of the HMCT websites.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Graphic Design
  • Demonstrated proficiency in letterpress printing and letterform design,
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator) with the ability to execute high-quality design work across print and digital platforms and social media.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage in social media content creation and design, including the development of visual assets, branding strategies and engagement tactics for digital platforms.
  • Experience with research, development, and curation of contemporary art programs.
  • Extensive typographic knowledge and applications, including both Latin and non-Latin fonts.
  • Demonstrated research, writing, and editing skills.
  • Experience with catalog/monograph production, including layout, design and pre-press.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including academic translation (English to Spanish; Spanish to English).
  • Knowledge of best archival practices for handling artwork.
  • Detail-oriented, highly organized, reliable and resourceful, able to balance priorities and take initiative.
  • Ability to work well in a multi-ethnic and multi-cultural environment with students, faculty and staff.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate and execute design concepts in alignment with the aesthetic standards and design principles established by HMCT, ensuring all work meets professional and institutional quality expectations while also addressing functional requirements for various applications.
  • Develop and manage typographic programming identities, ensuring clear, innovative, and cohesive visual systems across HMCT initiatives, workshops, and exhibitions.
  • Design and produce branding materials, including logotypes, event identities, and promotional assets, ensuring consistency across print and digital media.
  • Prepare files for layout, pre-press production, and final output, ensuring accuracy in color management, typography, and print specifications when necessary.
  • Format and optimize materials for social media, adapting designs for various platforms (Instagram, X, LinkedIn, etc.), ensuring visual consistency, accessibility, and engagement with diverse audiences.
  • Design and produce audio/visual installations involving multimedia, projection mapping, motion graphics, and interactive displays, ensuring seamless integration of complex materials, technologies, and spatial considerations.
  • Create interactive content and computational design solutions for HMCT programs, utilizing tools such as HTML/CSS, Processing, or other relevant software to develop dynamic and engaging digital experiences.
  • Exhibition & Program Development: Curate and organize exhibitions, workshops, and public programs that showcase research and creative work, collaborating with institutional partners, galleries, and external curators to ensure high-quality presentation and engagement.
  • Collaborate with the Creative Director to research, plan, install, and de-install exhibitions across multiple HMCT-managed spaces, including South Campus Gallery, Archival Showcases, Storefront Gallery, South Campus Billboards, and Archetype Press showcases.
  • Ensure all exhibitions and related programming (workshops, lectures, and special events) are executed at the highest professional and curatorial standards.
  • Assist in coordinating gallery staff, external curators, and ArtCenter Exhibitions staff to ensure adherence to best practices in exhibition planning, safe handling of artwork, installation logistics, lighting design, and spatial organization.
  • Work with the Creative Director to oversee and supervise exhibition installations, ensuring proper preparation of spaces, including wall repairs, lighting adjustments, signage placement, and layout refinements before and after installations.
  • Track and document all loaned artwork, ensuring compliance with proper handling, storage, transportation, and condition reporting procedures while at HMCT.
  • Maintain clear records of incoming and outgoing pieces to mitigate risk and uphold professional archival standards.
  • Conduct research and contribute to the writing, planning, and production of at least 3 publications per year, including exhibition brochures, catalogs, and monographs.
  • Oversee layout, typography, and pre-press production to maintain design excellence and print quality. Develop and execute publicity strategies for exhibitions and programming, creating promotional materials, press releases, digital content, and social media campaigns to increase visibility and engagement with diverse audiences.
  • Ensure compliance with ArtCenter Environmental Health and Safety guidelines, proactively maintaining a safe, accessible, and secure work and learning environment for students, faculty, and staff.
  • Conduct regular safety checks and coordinate necessary precautions for exhibition installations and programming.
  • With the Creative Director, work on designing, updating, and maintaining HMCT’s web presence, ensuring a visually cohesive and user-friendly experience.
