Requirements

Knowledge of MATHEMATICAL CALCULATIONS.
Knowledge of STANDARD SAFETY RULES AND PROCEDURES.
Knowledge of THE PROCEDURES, THE PROCEDURES, TECHNIQUES AND USE OF EQUIPMENT IN THE MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR OF HIGHWAYS, BRIDGES AND/OR OTHER HIGHWAY STRUCTURES.
Skills in OPERATING A VARIETY OF HAND AND POWER TOOLS.

Due to the nature of this position, the incumbent must respond to emergencies and be “on-call” (24-hour duty) when necessary.
While on-duty status, the position’s incumbent must be readily available to operate a commercial motor vehicle (CMV), consistent with the type of commercial driver's license (CDL) the incumbent is required to possess, or on a routine basis performs other CMV safety-sensitive functions.
A valid Class "B" CDL is required at time of hire.
Obtain a CDL Class “A” Instructional Permit within 60 days of appointment to the position and obtain a CDL Class “A” license within 10 months of appointment to the position.
The incumbent of this position is required to work with or around Department of Corrections inmates.
Must obtain certification in Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic) - Intermediate Level within one year and maintain it.
Requires two years of experience in operating small/medium equipment and vehicles.
A Class “B” CDL with air brakes is required at time of hire.
Obtain a CDL Class "A" Instructional Permit within 60 days of appointment to the position and obtain a CDL Class "A" license within 10 months of appointment to the position.
This position requires a valid Class (B) driver license with an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department’s Driver’s Record Requirements Policy.

Responsibilities

Upon receipt of the required CDL Instructional permit or license; operates vehicles and a variety of large equipment to include, but not limited to; road graders, sewer cleaner and hydraulic excavators in bridge and roadway maintenance.
Performs minor maintenance and servicing work in connection with any type of equipment operated and assists in the repairs of this equipment; check and add fluids, checks/adjusts brakes, maintains proper air pressure in all tires, etc. Cleans and washes equipment.
Coordinates, participates, and directs the maintenance activity of the assigned crew.
Assists in selecting materials, supplies, equipment, inspecting, planning workloads, work flows, deadlines, work objectives and time utilization with employees.
Maintains records of operation.
Prepares and maintains daily paperwork such as crew activity reports and daily vehicle check lists.
Performs independent manual labor incidental to job assignments.
Performs Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic).
Performs rough carpentry, masonry, painting and/or assists in the assembly and erection of highway signs.
Trains crew members in the operation of heavy equipment and of basic Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic).
Assists with crew activity reports as needed.
