Requirements

  • Knowledge of MATHEMATICAL CALCULATIONS.
  • Knowledge of STANDARD SAFETY RULES AND PROCEDURES.
  • Knowledge of THE PROCEDURES, THE PROCEDURES, TECHNIQUES AND USE OF EQUIPMENT IN THE MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR OF HIGHWAYS, BRIDGES AND/OR OTHER HIGHWAY STRUCTURES.
  • Skills in OPERATING A VARIETY OF HAND AND POWER TOOLS.
  • Skills in OPERATING AND PERFORMING MINOR MAINTENANCE ON LARGE EQUIPMENT AND VEHICLES.
  • Skills in COMPLETING JOB RELATED REPORTS AND FORMS.
  • Skills in COMMUNICATING BOTH VERBALLY AND IN WRITING, INCLUDING FOLLOWING ORAL/WRITTEN INSTRUCTIONS.

  • Due to the nature of this position, the incumbent must respond to emergencies and be “on-call” (24-hour duty) when necessary.
  • While on-duty status, the position’s incumbent must be readily available to operate a commercial motor vehicle (CMV), consistent with the type of commercial driver's license (CDL) the incumbent is required to possess, or on a routine basis performs other CMV safety-sensitive functions.
  • A valid Class "B" CDL is required at time of hire.
  • Obtain a CDL Class “A” Instructional Permit within 60 days of appointment to the position and obtain a CDL Class “A” license within 10 months of appointment to the position.
  • The incumbent of this position is required to work with or around Department of Corrections inmates.
  • Must obtain certification in Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic) - Intermediate Level within one year and maintain it.
  • Requires two years of experience in operating small/medium equipment and vehicles.
  • A Class “B” CDL with air brakes is required at time of hire.
  • Obtain a CDL Class "A" Instructional Permit within 60 days of appointment to the position and obtain a CDL Class "A" license within 10 months of appointment to the position.
  • This position requires a valid Class (B) driver license with an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department’s Driver’s Record Requirements Policy.

Responsibilities

  • Upon receipt of the required CDL Instructional permit or license; operates vehicles and a variety of large equipment to include, but not limited to; road graders, sewer cleaner and hydraulic excavators in bridge and roadway maintenance.
  • Performs minor maintenance and servicing work in connection with any type of equipment operated and assists in the repairs of this equipment; check and add fluids, checks/adjusts brakes, maintains proper air pressure in all tires, etc. Cleans and washes equipment.
  • Coordinates, participates, and directs the maintenance activity of the assigned crew.
  • Assists in selecting materials, supplies, equipment, inspecting, planning workloads, work flows, deadlines, work objectives and time utilization with employees.
  • Maintains records of operation.
  • Prepares and maintains daily paperwork such as crew activity reports and daily vehicle check lists.
  • Performs independent manual labor incidental to job assignments.
  • Performs Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic).
  • Performs rough carpentry, masonry, painting and/or assists in the assembly and erection of highway signs.
  • Trains crew members in the operation of heavy equipment and of basic Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic).
  • Assists with crew activity reports as needed.
