Requirements

Knowledge of mathematical calculations
Knowledge of standard safety rules and procedures
Knowledge of the procedures, techniques and use of equipment in the maintenance and repair of highways, bridges and/or other highway structures.
Skills in operating a variety of hand and power tools
Skills in operating and performing minor maintenance on large equipment and vehicles
Skills in completing job related reports and forms
Skills in communicating both verbally and in writing, including following oral/written instructions.
Ability to operate a variety of heavy equipment
Ability to train others
Ability to read and understand job related materials
Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with others
Ability to lift, carry, and handle up to 50 pounds
Ability to stoop, climb, squat, push, pull, crawl or bend on a frequent basis
Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions, on various terrains and at various heights or in high volume traffic; stand for an extended period of time
Requires two years of experience in operating small/medium equipment and vehicles.
A Class “B” CDL with air brakes is required at time of hire.
Obtain a CDL Class “A” Instructional Permit within 60 days of appointment to the position and obtain a CDL Class “A” license within 10 months of appointment to the position.
This position requires a valid Class B driver license with an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department’s Driver’s Record Requirements Policy.

Responsibilities

Operates vehicles and a variety of large equipment to include, but not limited to; road graders, sewer cleaner and hydraulic excavators in bridge and roadway maintenance. Performs minor maintenance and servicing work in connection with any type of equipment operated and assists in the repairs of this equipment; check and add fluids, checks/adjusts brakes, maintains proper air pressure in all tires, etc. Cleans and washes equipment.
Coordinates, participates, and directs the maintenance activity of the assigned crew. Assists in selecting materials, supplies, equipment, inspecting, planning workloads, workflows, deadlines, work objectives and time utilization with employees. Maintains records of operation. Prepares and maintains daily paperwork such as crew activity reports and daily vehicle check lists.
Performs independent manual labor incidental to job assignments.
Performs Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic).
Performs rough carpentry, masonry, painting and/or assists in the assembly and erection of highway signs.
Trains crew members in the operation of heavy equipment and of basic Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic). Assists with crew activity reports as needed.
