About The Position

This position plays a crucial role in maintaining our roadways. The incumbent will operate small to medium equipment and vehicles, use a variety of hand tools, repair/replace signs and trim trees. This position will perform Temporary Traffic Control in work zones and road closures.

  • Requires two years of experience in operating small/medium equipment and vehicles.
  • A Class “B” CDL with air brakes is required at time of hire.
  • Obtain a CDL Class “A” Instructional Permit within 60 days of appointment to the position and obtain a CDL Class “A” license within 10 months of appointment to the position.
  • This position requires a valid Class B driver license with an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department’s Driver’s Record Requirements Policy.
  • In order to be eligible for hire into a position requiring a Commercial Driver License (CDL), applicants must register with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s Drug and Alcohol (FMCSA) Clearinghouse, as required, for the Department to conduct a pre-employment query.
  • To be considered for employment, applicants must meet the qualifications outlined in Title 49 CFR Part 391.11.

Responsibilities

  • Operates vehicles and a variety of large equipment to include, but not limited to, road graders, sewer cleaner and hydraulic excavators in bridge and roadway maintenance.
  • Performs minor maintenance and servicing work in connection with any type of equipment operated including but not limited to: check and add fluids, checks/adjusts brakes, maintains proper air pressure in all tires, etc.
  • Assists in the repair of operated equipment. Cleans and washes equipment.
  • Coordinates, participates, and directs the maintenance activity of the assigned crew.
  • Assists in selecting materials, supplies, equipment, inspecting, planning workloads, workflows, deadlines, work objectives and time utilization with employees.
  • Maintains records of operation.
  • Prepares and maintains daily paperwork such as crew activity reports and daily vehicle check lists.
  • Performs independent manual labor incidental to job assignments
  • Performs Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic).
  • Performs rough carpentry, masonry, painting and/or assists in the assembly and erection of highway signs.
  • Trains crew members in the operation of heavy equipment and of basic Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic).
  • Assists with crew activity reports as needed.
