About The Position

Mortenson is currently seeking an experienced Senior Engineering Lead I - Power System Studies, responsible for a broad range of detailed engineering designs for high voltage substation, collection, and transmission system for utility scale Wind, Solar and Storage projects. You will be responsible for working closely with other engineering and design team members to coordinate the overall design package and requirements. The main focus of this role would be to lead the Power Systems Studies team. This includes performing QA/QC and stamping reports for some of the following: Short Circuit, Reactive Power, Losses in PSSE; TOV and Harmonics in PSCAD and Arc Flash in ETAP. This also includes resource management for the studies team – managing schedules and competing priorities for the team to ensure successful execution of all commitments. This includes being able to communicate results to other stakeholders and owner’s of projects effectively and be able to be the subject matter expert on the studies being performed. Hiring Locations: Minneapolis, MN, Fargo, ND, San Antonio, TX, or Denver, CO. Remote locations would be considered with periodic travel.

Requirements

  • Degree is from a school of engineering with accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) as a professional engineering curriculum
  • 12+ years of related work experience in system studies, ideally for wind, solar, storage projects. Including modeling inverter generation systems with a strong understanding of power flows, short circuit, reactive power, losses, TOV, harmonics and arc flash. Understanding all inputs, modeling factors and being able to communicate results in report format and verbally to others
  • 1+ years of experience leading teams and project scope
  • Experienced in electrical power engineering theories and principles
  • Experienced in researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations, and preparing and presenting recommendations
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Professional Engineering (PE) certification
  • Ability to travel up to 20%.
  • Must be currently legally authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship for employment visa status (e.g., H1B status, 0-1, TN, CPT, OPT, etc.). We are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment Visa at this time.

  • Master’s or PhD Degree in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) or related Engineering program preferred

Responsibilities

  • Managed other team members and worked through personnel issues successfully
  • Managed team scheduling and balancing competing priorities for successful implementation of the work for the team
  • Responsible for working closely with other engineering and design team members to coordinate the overall design package and requirements
  • Evaluate, select, and apply standard engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria by using judgment in making adaptations and modifications and providing interpretations and conclusions with support from other Engineers
  • Interface and present to multiple stakeholders (e.g. customer decision-makers, project teams, etc.)
  • Perform data analysis and basic engineering calculations required for designs from low voltage through 500 kV substations.
  • Assist with the review and approval of equipment vendor drawings and test reports on equipment from manufacturers
  • Provide engineering support for proposals, estimating, procurement, and construction
  • Mentor, coach and develop junior team members
  • Assists higher and lower-level engineers in the completion of large complex projects
  • Support studies methodology development that shape analysis practices aligned with our customer requirements and Mortenson’s best practice standards
  • Coordinate with other engineering disciplines and Design Phase Managers to successfully deliver design projects
  • Verify that construction agrees with electrical engineering design drawings
  • Assist in the implementation of a QA/QC process
  • Assist in the development and evaluation of the technical requirements for procurement and construction packages
  • Assist field personnel in resolving unanticipated site conditions
