Position Objective: Plans, organizes, and direct the overall operations of the laboratory across the health system. Annually develops, communicates, and coordinates area specific strategic plans that are consistent with the organizational goals, vision, and mission statement. Explores opportunities to add value to job (innovative ideas) to benefit the organization and taking ownership of the outcome. Directs overall operational functions for assigned areas. Ensures quality assurance program. Monitors compliance activities as required by various laboratory regulatory agencies. Ensures necessary follow-up, actions, changes as required for resolution of identified issues within meaningful time frame. Projects volumes, needs, and clinical services on an annual basis justifying variances and initiating corrective actions to adjust variances accordingly. Develops and oversees departmental budgets to concur with organizational and departmental goals. Directs the ongoing activities of personnel related to skills competency targets and adherence to staffing policies to assure efficiency of resources. Maintains laboratory staff results by counseling and disciplining employees; planning, monitoring, and appraising job results. Participates in selection, assessment and negotiation for laboratory equipment, services and materials. Responsible for participation in capital equipment funding by presentation of required information to facilitate committee in decisions and selections. Evaluates and establishes cost for individual tests; determines most cost-effective method for performing testing; negotiates with vendors for best pricing. In conjunction with departmental leadership, maintains medical laboratory productivity by monitoring workload of functional areas; identifying peak and slack periods; making operational and staffing adjustment. Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies. Maintains current knowledge of discipline-specific coding and billing to ensure charges are appropriately created and applied to patient and/or client accounts Resolves problems by consulting with pathologists, laboratory leadership, technical specialists, physician, nurses, and other healthcare professionals; actively participating in committee meetings. Ensures departmental compliance with applicable regulatory agencies including checklist compliance and staff competency. Maintains an organized record keeping system that is regulatory inspection-ready at all times.
