About The Position

The Senior Counselor provides direct services to FLACRA’s clients through individual, family, and group counseling. This role also offers clinical backup to the Outpatient Clinic Director and Program Manager. Under the direction of the Team Manager, the Senior Counselor is responsible for assessing and developing quality care for clients by supporting and supervising FLACRA's counseling staff. Key duties include providing diagnostic evaluative services to referred clients, assessing primary and secondary diagnoses, and delivering direct therapeutic services. The position requires self-direction and independent judgment in handling intake and service loads, as well as participation in community presentations, training programs, and various agency meetings. The Senior Counselor will also direct activities of Addiction Counselors/Evaluators, support staff, and students as needed, provide training to peers and new staff, and assist in the direct supervision of counseling staff when the team manager is absent. The role demands the ability to manage pressure, remain calm in crises, and possess strong diagnostic abilities, along with knowledge of OASAS regulations.

Requirements

  • Three years of any combination of education and supervisory experience in health and human services.
  • Valid NYS Drivers License.
  • Ability to supervise and direct the activities of other counselors and staff.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and work cooperatively with culturally diverse persons, staff and community service providers.
  • Knowledge of local behavioral health service system.
  • Ability to multi-task.
  • Good problem solving & time management skills.
  • Ability to remain calm in a crisis.
  • Knowledge regarding OASAS regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct services to FLACRA’s clients via individual, family and group counseling.
  • Provide for clinical backup to the Outpatient Clinic Director.
  • Provide, under the direction of the Team Manager, assessment of and development of quality care to clients via support and supervision of the FLACRA counseling staff.
  • Provide direct diagnostic evaluative services to clients referred to this Agency by many varied referral sources.
  • Assess the client’s primary and secondary diagnosis and, thus, need for further counseling.
  • Supply identified clients direct therapeutic services through individual, conjoint, family and/or group therapy.
  • Carry out the Agency’s responsibilities to its clientele with self-direction and competence.
  • Handle intake and service load with independent judgment using self-initiated consultation in technical problems of diagnostic evaluation in treatment techniques.
  • Participate in community presentations and training programs.
  • Participate in general, staff, in-service and supervisory meetings held by the Agency or counseling staff.
  • Direct activities of Addiction Counselors/Evaluators, support staff and students as required.
  • Provide training as needed to peer and new staff on TIER, group skills, etc.
  • Aid in the direct supervision of the counseling staff in the absence of the team manager.
  • Handle pressure if there is a clinic problem and also remain calm in a crisis.
  • Provide clinical backup for the Program Manager and have good diagnostic abilities.
  • Perform other functions as directed.
