The Senior Accountant – Operations and Cost Accounting, will play a key role in analyzing manufacturing costs, maintaining cost standards, while serving as a business partner to Operations, Supply Chain, and Engineering to improve financial performance. This individual will ensure accurate inventory valuation, support monthly close activities, and deliver meaningful reporting that drives strategic business decisions. The position requires a hands-on, detail-oriented finance professional who can build scalable processes, ensure financial discipline, and support data-driven operational decisions in a fast-paced manufacturing startup. This role reports to the Director of Accounting Operations and will ideally be based in Detroit, Michigan or Union City, Indiana.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field required.
  • 3-5+ years of progressive cost accounting or manufacturing finance experience; automotive or EV OEM experience strongly preferred.
  • Strong intellectual curiosity and bias toward action; consistently investigates issues beyond the surface, defines next steps without direction, and takes ownership to resolve problems end to end.
  • Strong command of standard cost accounting, inventory management, and plant financial operations.
  • Strong ERP experience and advanced Excel skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, evolving production environment.
  • Approximately 25% travel required.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze manufacturing costs, inventory valuations, and production variances.
  • Prepare and maintain standard cost models; update cost rolls as needed.
  • Partner with Operations, Purchasing, and Supply Chain to ensure accurate product costing and margin analysis.
  • Coordinate and oversee annual physical inventory processes with Operations partners, ensuring compliance with internal controls, accurate reconciliation to system balances, and audit-ready documentation.
  • Support the month-end close process, including journal entries, account reconciliations, and variance analysis for areas of ownership, which include inventory, warranty, revenue recognition, and others as needed.
  • Develop and maintain key performance indicators (KPIs) to monitor operational efficiency.
  • Participate in budgeting and forecasting processes, providing cost and margin insights to FP&A and business partners.
  • Identify process improvements and implement best practices in cost accounting and reporting.
  • Partner with IT to design and maintain cost accounting data integrity within the ERP system (QAD).
  • Support internal controls, SOX compliance, and audit requests related to inventory and cost accounting.
  • Participate in ERP enhancements and process automation initiatives.
  • Perform other month-end closing activities as assigned.
