About The Position

Welcome to the Undeclared and Academic Advising Center (UAAC). We support all undergraduate students at Cal State Fullerton (CSUF), and our goal is to empower students to seek support and take the lead throughout their academic journey. We are seeking an exceptional individual to join our team as the Senior Academic Advisor and Degree Completion Coordinator (Student Services Professional III). This role focuses on academic advising and coordinating programs aimed at supporting student success and degree completion initiatives, fostering academic achievement, and promoting retention and graduation. Our Academic Advising mission is to work in a collaborative partnership with students, a shared responsibility, where the advisor and student are equally invested in the educational process and holistic development of that student. The ideal candidate in this role should have a positive attitude and an active, energetic mind characterized by highly ethical practices and a commitment to inclusivity, openness, flexibility, integrity, and kindness. Reporting to the Director of Academic Advising, Operations and Specialized Programs, the Senior Academic Advisor and Degree Completion Coordinator is responsible for the development and implementation of academic advising programming related to degree completion in the Office of Academic Advising at CSUF. This position requires a deep commitment to student development, a strong understanding of academic policies and procedures, and the ability to collaborate effectively with the campus community. Provide specialized academic advising services, track the academic progress of assigned students, and assess retention and graduation rates of participants. Expected to develop plans and approaches to situations where few precedents or guidelines exist and adapt to rapidly changing situations. Using a data-driven approach and in collaboration with members of the advising community, the Senior Academic Advisor and Degree Completion Coordinator execute and evaluates student success programs for four-year graduation and two-year graduation for Fullerton Finish, Finish in Four/Through in Two (formerly known as California Promise) program students. Assist in the creation of program objectives, timelines, and assessment. Monitor program progress and performance, track milestones, and ensure adherence to timelines. The Senior Academic Advisor and Degree Completion Coordinator collaborates with team members and academic colleges/departments to ensure the successful execution of programs and the achievement of programmatic goals. The Senior Academic Advisor and Degree Completion Coordinator is responsible for providing one-on-one and group academic advising to their assigned student population utilizing an advanced, developmental, holistic, and problem-solving approach. Serve as a primary point of contact for program participants, engage in communication and outreach efforts, and maintain accurate records of student interactions using advising technology resources. Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent from an accredited four-year college or university in a related field including or supplemented by upper division or graduate course work in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution plus three years of professional student services work in the field.
  • A master’s degree from an accredited college or university in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a job-related field may be substituted for one year of professional experience.
  • A Doctoral degree from an accredited college or university and the appropriate internship or clinical training in a relevant field may be substituted for three years of the required professional experience.
  • Ability to plan, develop, coordinate, supervise, and organize programs and activities.
  • Ability to interact with a diverse student population, faculty, staff, and the public.
  • Ability to analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action.
  • Ability to advise students individually and in groups on complex student-related matters.
  • Ability to complete assignments without detailed instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a variety of individuals.
  • Possession of excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as the ability to acquire knowledge of campus procedures, activities, and the overall organization.
  • A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily and is required for employment.
  • CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information.
  • Failure to complete the background check satisfactorily may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree from a four-year college or university in Counseling, Higher Education, Social Work, Education, or related field.
  • Experience working with staff, faculty, and administrators from various backgrounds and a proven record of organizing and leading advising programming efforts in a college or university environment.
  • Strong interpersonal communication, relationship-building, and student service skills are essential.
  • Knowledge of accredited four-year higher education institutions’ general education and baccalaureate degree requirements, as well as academic advising-related policies.
  • Possess skills in collecting, compiling, analyzing, and evaluating data, and in making verbal or written presentations based on these analyses.
  • Demonstrate initiative and resourcefulness in planning work assignments and implementing long-range program improvements.
  • Proficiency in relevant student engagement and academic advising platforms and tools, such as EAB Navigate, PeopleSoft, and Degree Audit, along with proficiency in common office suites, such as Office365, for data management and reporting purposes.
  • Additionally, experience with data analytics and technology tools as they relate to planning, data-driven program development, and assessment is highly desired.
