JOB SUMMARY: Under general direction of a Supervisor II or Watch Commander, supervises the security and traffic safety activities of Security Division personnel. Exercises supervision of an assigned shift of personnel; responds to and documents reports of serious incidents; coordinates field search and emergency activities; patrols the community and enforces regulations. May serve as Watch Commander as well as Scheduling Supervisor. Work involves regular contact with residents, other Divisions and Departments, law enforcement, fire and medical services, other public agencies and the public. Must be able to work a rotating schedule between day, swing and graveyard shifts, including weekends and holidays. The Security Supervisor I is an exempt position.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school, preferably supplemented by college-level course work in management, security or police sciences.
  • Previous supervisory experience.
  • Considerable experience in security services, customer service, law enforcement, military, training or any equivalent combination of education and experience, which produces the following:
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the job.
  • Knowledge of PC and applicable software programs.
  • Knowledge of the techniques of leadership and supervision.
  • Knowledge of the functions and objectives of state, local and federal law enforcement agencies, and the role of private security.
  • Knowledge of controlling laws and regulations.
  • Knowledge of the laws governing arrest, search and seizure as they apply to law enforcement agencies and private citizens.
  • Knowledge of interviewing and investigating techniques.
  • Knowledge of security reporting procedures.
  • Knowledge of modern office equipment, practices and procedures.
  • Ability to supervise the work of department personnel.
  • Ability to gather, analyze and evaluate data and present concise oral and written reports.
  • Ability to plan and organize rotating shifts schedules for a 24-hour operation.
  • Ability to organize and maintain records of scheduling and payroll.
  • Ability to understand and relate to the needs of senior citizens.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with subordinates, co-workers, Community government and management, state and federal authorities, civic leaders and the public.
  • Possession of a valid California Driver’s License.
  • Possession or ability to obtain a valid BSIS California Guard Card.

Nice To Haves

  • Possession of a certificated designation as a Law Enforcement or Peace Officer is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, organizes, supervises and participates in a variety of security activities.
  • Confers with the Supervisor II or Watch Commander concerning Division objectives, policies, problems and matters affecting other Divisions and Departments.
  • Plans and implements new programs or procedures in accordance with established objectives.
  • Implements and participates in developing work programs and schedules.
  • Implements and makes effective recommendations regarding Division training and safety programs.
  • Supervision is exercised over an assigned shift of Security Division personnel including Gate Ambassadors, Gate Ambassador Rovers, Security Patrol Officers, Traffic Specialists, Dispatchers and other Security personnel on duty.
  • Provides active and continuous engagement in the events and personnel of the shift, including feedback to subordinates through positive leadership and continuous training, testing, coaching, and counseling on work performance, including safety, attention to duty, appearance, report writing and positive community relations.
  • Administers prompt corrective action and progressive discipline to correct performance deficiencies.
  • Provides ongoing supervision and development for designated subordinates including personnel who may not regularly work with the Supervisor I.
  • Confers with other supervisory members to obtain feedback on designated subordinates.
  • Conducts annual performance evaluation reviews for assigned subordinates.
  • Provides feedback to employees throughout their review period that is timely, specific, honest and designed to help the employee succeed.
  • Administers corrective action and progressive discipline to correct performance deficiencies.
  • Updates subordinates and relief supervisor(s) on matters of interest and concern to the Security Division, including new instructions, memorandums and changes to policy and procedure.
  • Supervises, assists and trains Traffic Specialists in their duties and provides performance assessment input to the Supervisor II having annual evaluation responsibility; routinely assists Traffic Specialist with traffic matters involving upset persons and with major and injury accidents.
  • Responds to and documents traffic collisions when a Traffic Specialist is not on duty or is otherwise unavailable.
  • Supervises, assists and trains Security Patrol Officers with handling and documentation of minor incidents, crimes and violations of Community rules and regulations and other calls for service.
  • Supervises, assists and trains Gate Ambassadors in their duties.
  • Assists the Supervisor II in supervising, assisting and training Dispatchers, Security Inspectors, Technicians, Coin Collectors and other support staff in their duties; provides performance assessment input to the Supervisor II regarding those employees’ performance evaluations.
  • In the absence of a Security Supervisor II, serves as the Watch Commander having overall authority, responsibility and accountability for the Security Division’s activities during assigned shift.
  • The Supervisor I serving as Watch Commander has command of all other on duty staff, including other Supervisor I’s.
  • Exercises primary control of all units’ response and search efforts within the Community for lost or missing persons and persons of interest in criminal or suspicious activity, and in cases of disaster or emergency.
  • Responds to reports of serious crime, situations involving a law enforcement response in the community, employee or resident complaints involving division or other agency employees, incidents presenting liability concerns to the community and other situations as needed.
  • Documents and/or supervises the documentation of incidents as required.
  • Cooperates with law enforcement investigations and testifies in court as needed.
  • Reviews subordinate personnel reports and other documentation for timeliness, completeness and accuracy.
  • Provides feedback, training and assistance as needed to improve the quality of reports.
  • Inspects employee uniforms, division vehicles, equipment and facilities for cleanliness and proper operation.
  • Takes corrective action and/or makes recommendations and work orders for repair.
  • Evaluates operational processes, procedures, equipment and installations to identify physical security and efficiency improvements and provide recommendations to Division manager.
  • Participates in the selection of prospective employees for hire and the consideration of subordinate employees for promotion or reassignment.
  • Patrols and monitors the security of the Community by vehicle and on-foot, observing for unauthorized persons and vehicles, physical hazards and violations of laws, rules and regulations; documents violations.
  • May be called to assist law enforcement agencies to investigate, pursue, apprehend and/or cite violators.
  • Conducts foot patrols of assigned areas of the Community inspecting for and documenting safety and maintenance issues, perimeter installations breaks and other signs of security compromise.
  • Under the direction of a Supervisor II or Watch Commander, confidentially investigates and documents complaints of employee misconduct.
  • Regular Attendance Required. All regular duties performed on-site for the Community.
