About The Position

As a Security Officer - TWIC Gatehouse in Norfolk, VA, you will serve and safeguard clients in a range of industries such as Logistics & Distribution, and more. As an Access Control Officer at a busy logistics and distribution location, you will help manage entry points, verify credentials, support badge and visitor processing, and conduct routine patrols while maintaining a visible presence to help deter security-related incidents. You will deliver clear communication and customer service to drivers, employees, and guests, backed by Allied Universal values of agility, reliability, innovation, teamwork, and integrity with a caring, people-first culture.

Requirements

  • Have at least 1+ years of security-related experience.
  • Possess a TSA issued TWIC.
  • Be at least 18 years of age for unarmed roles; 21+ years of age for armed roles.
  • Possess a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • As a condition of employment, applicants will be subject to a background investigation in accordance with all federal, state, and local laws.
  • Allied Universal will consider qualified applications with criminal histories in a manner consistent with applicable laws.
  • As a condition of employment, applicants will be subject to a drug screen to the extent permitted by law.
  • Licensing requirements are subject to state and/or local laws and regulations and may be required prior to employment.
  • A valid driver’s license will be required for driving positions only.

  • Access control and/or badge experience is preferred.
  • Customer service experience is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide customer service to site personnel, drivers, contractors, and visitors by following security-related procedures, site-specific policies, and when appropriate, emergency response activities.
  • Control access at entry and exit points by checking identification, issuing visitor credentials, verifying appointments, and directing arrivals to the proper staging and/or check-in areas.
  • Manage vehicle and container flow through gates by confirming bills of lading, shipping paperwork, and/or delivery authorizations in accordance with site requirements.
  • Operate access control systems, radios, phones, and computer-based logs to document entries, exits, inspections, and unusual activity.
  • Conduct bag, package, and/or vehicle inspections when required by post orders and report prohibited or suspicious items according to procedure.
  • Monitor cameras and alarms to help identify unauthorized access, damage, and/or policy violations and notify site contacts and/or Allied Universal supervision as required.
  • Respond to incidents and critical situations in a calm, problem-solving manner, including traffic issues, disputes at the gate, medical events, and weather-related interruptions.
  • Conduct regular and random patrols around dock areas, yards, warehouses, parking areas, and the perimeter as directed by post orders. Working environments and conditions may vary by site.
  • Complete detailed written reports and shift pass-downs, including incident reports, daily activity logs, and documentation of access control actions.
  • Assist with enforcement of site rules such as badge display, restricted area boundaries, and pedestrian and vehicle routing, escalating concerns through the chain of command.
  • Coordinate with site operations, transportation partners, and local responders during disruptions, following established communication and notification procedures.
  • Support emergency and evacuation procedures when directed, including directing traffic, controlling access points, and accounting for visitors and contractors at muster locations.
