About The Position

The Security Monitor is responsible for maintaining the safety and security of the facility, grounds, and individuals accessing the Drop In Center (Day Center, Night Shelter, Safe Park program) during overnight hours. This role ensures that the program site remains safe, calm, and orderly by monitoring activity throughout the facility, conducting routine rounds, and responding to safety concerns as they arise. The Security Monitor plays an important role in supporting a secure and respectful environment for program participants and staff. This position requires attentiveness, sound judgment, and the ability to respond appropriately to incidents while maintaining a professional and respectful approach when interacting with individuals experiencing homelessness. The Security Monitor works closely with program staff to ensure safety procedures are followed and that any incidents or concerns are promptly addressed and documented.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Experience in security, safety monitoring, or similar roles preferred.
  • Experience working in shelter programs, social services, or environments serving vulnerable populations preferred.
  • Ability to remain alert and attentive throughout overnight shifts.
  • Strong communication and conflict resolution skills.
  • Ability to respond calmly and appropriately in challenging situations.
  • Experience working in shelters, drop-in centers, or other programs serving individuals experiencing homelessness.
  • Training in de-escalation, crisis response, or conflict management.
  • CPR/First Aid certification or willingness to obtain.
  • In possession of a valid CA driver's license, proof of insurance, and be approved by RP insurance as a driver in order to drive agency vehicles. If a staff member cannot be approved by RP insurance as a driver, employment might not be able to continue. Instances where staff cannot be approved to drive will be reviewed on a case by case basis to determine if employment can continue in their role without driving agency vehicles. Items considered include but are not limited to: the shift the staff member holds and the frequency/necessity of driving during that shift, the amount of time before the staff member may be approved to drive by the insurance carrier, the availability of other staff on site to drive agency vehicles as program needs require, etc.
  • Able to complete all required background checks. Additional requirements may be deemed necessary, including fingerprinting (Live Scan), completion of all Community Care Licensing (CCL) documents, and ability to meet CCL licensing requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Site Safety and Monitoring
  • Monitor the facility and surrounding grounds during overnight hours to ensure the safety and security of participants, staff, and property.
  • Conduct routine rounds and safety checks throughout the building, program spaces, and parking areas.
  • Observe program activity and ensure participants are adhering to program guidelines and safety expectations.
  • Monitor entrances and exits and support controlled access to the facility as required.
  • Incident Response
  • Respond promptly to safety concerns, disturbances, or unusual activity within the facility or surrounding grounds.
  • Use de-escalation techniques to address conflicts or disruptive behavior when appropriate.
  • Notify program staff or emergency services when necessary to address serious incidents or safety risks.
  • Program Support
  • Support overnight program operations by maintaining a calm and structured environment for participants.
  • Communicate relevant safety updates or concerns to program staff and leadership.
  • Assist staff in ensuring program rules and safety procedures are followed.
  • Documentation and Reporting
  • Maintain detailed logs of overnight activities including safety checks, incidents, and observations.
  • Complete incident reports and documentation as required.
  • Communicate important information to incoming staff during shift transitions.
  • Facility Oversight
  • Monitor the condition of the facility and report maintenance or safety concerns to program leadership.
  • Ensure program spaces remain secure throughout overnight hours.
  • Complete functional timesheets by assigned due dates in compliance with time allocations.
  • Actively participate in reflective supervision sessions.
  • Create and maintain documentation of processes and procedures related to job duties.
  • Other duties as assigned.
