About The Position

Under direct supervision of the Supervisor of Environmental & Interpretive Services, the Seasonal Naturalist – Tawny Oaks is responsible for the following: Opening and closing the Visitor’s Center daily. Assisting environmental staff in programming on-site such as guided hikes and field trips. Assisting the Land Steward with ecological restoration on-site. Assisting with biological surveys. Greeting park users while providing them with information and maps. Daily cleaning of the Visitor’s Center. Performing grounds and trail maintenance such as mowing and string trimming. Inspecting buildings, grounds, and trails. Facilitating building rentals and after-hours use as needed. Following all safety procedures that pertain to the duties performed; supporting all aspects of the Park District’s safety procedures. Performing all other duties as required. Essential Functions: The work requires some physical exertion in handling supplies, equipment, and materials. Prolonged standing, bending, and stooping, and the ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds are required on a periodic basis. The programmed activities involve everyday risks, which require normal safety precautions typical of the recreation industry and animal industry.QualificationsEducation: Any field of Natural Resources or Environmental Education is preferred. Experience: Previous experience in a natural resource setting is preferred. Knowledge and Ability: Solid knowledge of local flora and fauna, local ecosystems, and general knowledge of environmental issues. Must be able to work outdoors under all weather conditions. Experience with equipment such as mowers, string trimmers, and hand tools. Ability to communicate and work harmoniously with the public and fellow employees in an enthusiastic and cooperative manner. Ability to be professional, respectful, accountable, innovative, to follow safety procedures, and be equitable to both internal and external customers.
