About The Position

Schramm Education Center/Schramm Park State Recreation Area is seeking a naturalist to join our outdoor education team. Individual will assist the Outdoor Education Specialists with planning, coordination, and delivery of education programs for park visitors and field trip groups. Education programs are offered to a range of audiences and may include science content, outdoor skills (fishing, sling shots, bird watching, etc.), guided hikes, night programs, special events and more. In addition to educational and interpretative programs, individual will assist with housekeeping and maintenance of Education Center facilities and daily animal care. Individual will perform customer service activities, such as answering phones, taking payments, and answering questions. Perform related work as required. Naturalists may assist with programs and events at nearby parks (including Platte River State Park, Eugene T. Mahoney State Park, Louisville State Recreation Area, and Two Rivers State Recreation Area) as needed. This is a full-time, temporary position with a work schedule of Tuesday – Saturday.

Requirements

  • At least three months experience working in a recreational area, scenic attraction, hospitality, historical, retail or customer service setting, agricultural setting, or related coursework/training.
  • Knowledge of: Nebraska plant and animal species, natural resources, and outdoor recreation activities; basic science and ecological principles; animal care; safe work procedures; group management; education principles and practices.
  • Skills in: educating people of all levels and interests; communicating clearly with people from a variety of backgrounds; entry level outdoor recreation practices.
  • Ability to: communicate and effectively educate the public; provide excellent customer service and apply proper phone etiquette; understand and follow instructions; establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers; recognize safety hazards and take steps to correct the situation; bend, stoop, climb, reach frequently; work outdoors; remain standing and/or walking for long periods of time; ability to drive a vehicle for work purposes.
