About The Position

Do you enjoy hands-on outdoor work and protecting natural spaces? As a Natural Areas Worker - Seasonal, you’ll play a key role in preserving and restoring the Champaign Park District’s prairies, woodlands, and other natural areas. This position offers meaningful, physical work outdoors while contributing directly to environmental stewardship and the health of our community’s green spaces.

Requirements

  • Minimum 18 years of age.
  • Valid Illinois Driver’s License with clean driving record.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to operate and maintain vehicles, power equipment, and hand tools required for natural areas operations.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work, including frequent stooping, climbing, kneel, prolonged walking on uneven terrain, lifting up to 50 pounds regularly, and up to 100 pounds occasionally with assistance.
  • Ability to maintain necessary visual acuity (close, distance, peripheral, and depth perception) to safely perform job duties.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and around potential environmental hazards (e.g. ticks, poison ivy, herbicides).

Nice To Haves

  • Illinois Pesticide Operator’s License preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the establishment, maintenance, and restoration of natural areas
  • Monitor, identify, and control invasive species
  • Participate in prescribed burns as part of a trained burn crew
  • Collect, clean, and process native seeds for restoration projects
  • Safely operate and maintain vehicles, power equipment, and hand tools
  • Handle, mix, and apply herbicides and pesticides in compliance with safety regulations
  • Observe and report maintenance needs, hazards, or ordinance violations
  • Communicate work progress and issues with supervisors
  • Interact professionally with staff and the public
  • Perform physically demanding outdoor work in varied terrain and weather
  • Support and assist with training seasonal staff when assigned
  • Follow all Park District safety, confidentiality, and equal opportunity policies
