About The Position

Pottawatomie County Buildings and Grounds Department is hiring for one (1) seasonal labor position for 2026. This is a nonexempt temporary position under FLSA, supervised by the Pottawatomie County Building and grounds manager or their designee. The Temporary Seasonal Laborer is responsible for performing various tasks including mowing, weed trimming, spraying, baling cardboard, painting, and moving furniture. The role also requires operating various vehicles and assisting the noxious weed director with tasks. The position involves recurring and routine tasks, with deviations and unfamiliar situations referred to the Supervisor. The work consists of clear-cut and directly related tasks, requiring the ability to recognize and address safety concerns. The employee works independently with occasional supervision and has daily contact with the general public, co-workers, and supervisory personnel.

Requirements

  • No similar or related experience is required.
  • A valid Kansas Driver’s License is required.
  • A clean driving record (no misdemeanor or felony convictions for traffic / vehicular offenses that are less than five years old, no more than two at fault or chargeable accidents that are less than five years old, and no more than two traffic infractions that are less than one year old).
  • Ability to read and interpret the department manual.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral instructions.
  • Excellent interpersonal and public relations skills including ability to work with citizens and the public.
  • Ability to recognize safety concerns and be able to deal with them accordingly.
  • Passing pre-employment background checks which may include, but are not necessarily limited to: Drug Screening, Driving Record, Criminal History, Physical Capacity, and/or Skills Testing.

Nice To Haves

  • A high school diploma or GED is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Operates machinery including mowers, weed eaters, power tools and four-wheel drive trucks.
  • Assists in the construction and maintenance of County buildings.
  • Performs light maintenance and servicing work on equipment.
  • Bulk paint and segregate chemical as required.
  • Regular and predictable attendance required.
  • Maintains daily labor and equipment record.
  • Reports equipment problems to supervisor.
  • Ensures positive public relations with public and staff.
  • Assists other Building and Grounds, as well as noxious Weed employees as the need arises.
  • Performs other duties as deemed necessary or assigned.
