About The Position

Join The Wilds as a Seasonal Horseback Interpretive Guide, where you'll lead guests on guided horseback rides, share conservation stories, care for our herd, and ensure a safe, educational, and memorable experience for all visitors.

Requirements

  • Minimum age of 18, with a maximum weight of 225 lbs.
  • 2–3 years of horse care and trail riding experience required.
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Ability to safely mount, dismount, and assist guests with varying skill levels.
  • Comfortable riding and leading horses in uneven terrain and trail environments.
  • Public service experience and excellent communication skills (verbal & written).
  • Strong customer-service skills with the ability to engage guests of all ages.
  • Strong decision-making and adaptability skills.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Ability to operate a two-way radio.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a dynamic environment.
  • Reliable, punctual, and able to multitask in a fast-paced setting.
  • Possession of a valid state issued driver’s license.
  • Successfully complete a pre-employment drug screening and background check.
  • Subject to Drug-Free Workplace Policy, BMV Check, and Criminal Background Check.

Responsibilities

  • Guest Engagement & Interpretation
  • Present engaging and educational information about The Wilds' conservation work during tours at the barn and on horseback rides.
  • Provide exceptional guest service, including greeting visitors and giving riding instruction.
  • Serve as a Wilds ambassador, maintaining professional dress, language, and demeanor.
  • Act as a liaison for groups, ensuring a smooth and enjoyable experience.
  • Adapt interpretive content to audience needs (adults, families, children) to enhance guest understanding and enjoyment.
  • Maintain awareness of guest safety, comfort, and learning needs throughout the tours.
  • Horse Care & Safety
  • Teach safe horse interaction and riding techniques and assist guests on the trail.
  • Become familiar with each horse’s behavior and health needs.
  • Monitor horse health and coordinate with veterinary staff regularly.
  • Select and tack appropriate horses for riders before each ride.
  • Perform daily care and maintenance of horses and barn areas.
  • Follow established Wilds equine safety protocols for trail readiness, herd management, and guest handling.
  • Document and report behavioral changes or safety concerns promptly.
  • Facility & Grounds Maintenance
  • Assist with daily housekeeping and groundskeeping tasks.
  • Perform heavy lifting (up to 50 lbs.) as needed.
  • Ensure the barn and trail areas are clean, organized, and well-maintained.
  • Maintain cleanliness of guest spaces, prep areas, saddling stations, and equipment storage.
  • Operational Duties
  • Use ZIMS records system for logging horse health data (training provided).
  • Operate a two-way radio for communication.
  • Maintain flexibility with schedules that may change based on weather, attendance, or department needs.
  • Strive to further The Wilds' mission and support partner organizations like the Columbus Zoo, Zoombezi Bay, and Safari Golf Club.
  • Follow all safety protocols, emergency procedures, and radio communication standards.
  • Support other Visitor Operations departments during peak periods or special events when assigned.
