About The Position

The Custodian ensures that Cleveland Metroparks Nature Centers and facilities are presented to visitors in a clean and safe manner.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required; supplemented by one year of experience in custodial work; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
  • A valid driver’s license under the laws of the State of Ohio may be required.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with stakeholders, including employees and the general public.
  • Ability to speak and write clearly, concisely and persuasively using correct grammar, spelling and punctuation with ability to communicate one-on-one or in group settings.
  • Ability to perform work with a high degree of accuracy and organization.
  • Management skills and strong business acumen, including problem solving, vision, ability to manage multiple programs and meet deadlines, collaboration, leadership, decision making and ability to analyze diverse facts and develop clear and concise reports and recommendations.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others.
  • Proficiency in software programs including all Microsoft Office programs.
  • Mature professional attitude and considerable discretion, including ability to manage confidential information.
  • Ability to perform with considerable independence and initiative.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains cleanliness of restrooms: Checks and cleans all restroom sinks, toilets, urinals, baby change stations, walls, floors, doors, ceilings and mirrors; removes trash and debris and mops floors, wipes down stalls, and changes air freshening supplies as needed; unclogs clogged drains as needed; refills toilet accessories and hand soap dispensers.
  • Prepares spaces for various programs, meetings, and rentals, and then tears down and resets space after event conclusion: Prepares spaces according to provided instructions and expected attendance for a variety of functions; stores tables and chairs or sets up additional tables and chairs depending on the format and event requirements; pays special attention to restrooms before the event begins; vacuums or dust mops the room as needed; wipes down the chairs and tables to be used; wipes down the kitchen appliances along with sinks and floors; wipes down window ledges and doors; empties all trash and recyclables; assures audio and video equipment are available and in good working order; checks that the light bulbs in room are working properly.
  • Cleans and vacuums interior floors, steps, and walkways: Ensures all floors are kept clean by dust-mopping, wet mopping, sweeping or vacuuming; removes stains and hard to clear particles; keeps area free of tripping hazards.
  • Cleans exhibits and displays: Wipes down to a clean shine the fish tanks and other similar animal enclosures, pictures, information center displays, and signs.
  • Cleans windows, screens, and doors: Maintains cleanliness of windows and screens at entrances and exits, inside inter-office, rooms, and garage areas.
  • Manages outdoor clean-up and safety: Leaf blows all walkways, pathways, driveways, picnic areas, and pavilions removing debris as needed; snow blows all surrounding walkways, entrances, and exits as needed; picks up debris and litter from these areas and the parking lot.
  • Removes trash and recyclables and orders supplies: Collects throughout the center the recyclables, compost, and garbage by bagging and taking to the loading area for pick-up; replaces collection bins with new bags after washing them out as needed; takes the cardboard and paper recyclables to the recycle collection bin in the back of the parking lot.
  • Keeps direct supervisor promptly informed of key/significant issues or concerns.
  • Carries out duties and responsibilities in a safe and efficient manner to maintain a safe work environment and surrounding area for oneself, co-workers and public. Responds to hazardous situations and/or potentially unsafe conditions by taking corrective action as capable and promptly notifying supervisory personnel.
  • Updates and enhances own knowledge by involvement in continuing education for professional growth (i.e., attends relevant conferences, seminars, in-service trainings, and certification programs)
  • Performs related duties as assigned or apparent.
