The primary role of the Aquarist Supervisor is to manage daily operations of the Reef Life department. We are currently looking for a: Sea Life Park Aquarist Supervisor

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in (Biology, Zoology, or Marine Biology preferred) ; Equivalent work experience will also be considered.
  • Minimum of 3 years of demonstrated experience with marine animal care, including life support systems.
  • Minimum of 2 years supervisory experience
  • Must be SCUBA open water certified and be able to pass a dive test and physical
  • Must possess, or be able to obtain, Rescue Diver SCUBA certification by a nationally recognized instructors association (e.g. PADI, NAUI), Divemaster or Instructor certifications are a plus.
  • Must have, or be able to obtain, CPR and First Aid Certification.
  • Ability to read, write, and speak fluent English; Spanish or other bilingual language skills are a plus.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Ability to work flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from work for your scheduled shift
  • Must possess a strong passion and unwavering commitment for exceptional animal care and welfare
  • Must possess exceptional customer service skills, with an ability to resolve questions, problems, issues, and concerns in a positive and professional manner
  • Must possess effective communication skills, with the ability to convey ideas and concepts to students, park guests and leadership
  • Ability to safely dive underwater and follow all SCUBA protocols
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions and directives, as well as issue clear verbal/written instructions or directives to others
  • Ability to stand, walk, and remain on feet for majority of the workday
  • Ability to frequently balance, stoop, twist, kneel, bend, squat, or reach above shoulders
  • Ability to work in a salt-water environment both in and out of the water, at all times of the day and/or night
  • Ability to carry, push, pull, lift, and hold objects weighing 30 pounds or more

Nice To Haves

  • Techniques for restraining and capturing aquatic life
  • Experience diving in aquarium setting with sharks and stingrays
  • Positive Reinforcement training experience, aquatic animals preferred
  • Life Support system operation, design and/or build skills
  • Experience with ZIMS or Tracks data management

Responsibilities

  • Oversee daily operations in Reef Life department under direction of the Assistant Curator
  • Train and mentor staff in department procedures including animal care, educational talks, interactive programs, etc.
  • Act as an approachable mentor and coach to all assigned team members
  • Become knowledgeable of performing the essential duties of all aquarist positions and backfill these positions when needed
  • Participate in all aspects of supervision of assigned employees, including hiring, orientation, training, scheduling, performance coaching, and discipline.
  • Collaborate with Assistant Curator on development and implementation of department goals
  • Facilitate assigned research and conservation programs.
  • Respond to questions from the public concerning the animals and exhibits
  • Provide information to education and park team members regarding animals and exhibits, as needed
  • Participate in daily animal husbandry, interactive programs and maintenance of exhibits
  • Prepare food for, and feed, animals per daily diet plan in conjunction with training goals
  • Perform regular water quality analysis; maintain water quality equipment and log
  • Recognize symptoms of fish and invertebrate disease and poor health. Administer appropriate treatments according to established protocols and direction of veterinarian.
  • Provide daily reports on animals regarding general appearance, appetite, behavior, etc.
  • Accurately maintain feeding and training records
  • Keep up to date on the latest trends and techniques of animal care
  • Participate in capturing, restraining, and moving animals
  • Oversee cleaning and disinfection of utensils, work tools, and workspaces
  • Maintain high standards of exhibit appearance in and around enclosures, including conducting regular habitat maintenance activities
  • Perform minor or routine maintenance of enclosures & equipment
  • Operate, and train others on, hydraulic cleaning equipment for cleaning large exhibits
  • All other duties as assigned by leadership
