About The Position

The American Association for Cancer Research (AACR), with more than 61,000 laboratory, translational, and clinical researchers; population scientists; other health care professionals; and patient advocates residing in 143 countries and territories around the world, is the first and largest organization in the world dedicated to advances in all areas of high-quality, innovative cancer research. Its mission is to prevent and cure all cancers. The programs and activities of the AACR foster the exchange of new knowledge among scientists and physicians in cancer research as well as in related sciences. The AACR publishes ten peer-reviewed scientific journals and an award-winning magazine for cancer patients and their loved ones; convenes topical scientific conferences and an annual meeting that draws more than 22,500 participants; offers educational workshops that train young investigators in a variety of scientific and clinical areas; funds research fellowships, career development awards, and research grants for both senior and junior investigators; raises public awareness of the progress in the biology, detection, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of cancer; engages actively in advocacy for increased federal research funding and other national policies that accelerate progress against cancer; and interacts with regulatory agencies to support regulatory science and policy. Under the leadership of the Managing Director, Scientific Conferences and Workshops, the Scientific Program Administrator will manage key aspects related to the planning and execution of several scientific conferences and workshops per year. The Scientific Program Administrator will have the opportunity to assist in scientific content development, communication, and grant-writing in support of their assigned projects and will serve as the primary liaison between external volunteers and AACR team members. This position requires sustained interactions with leading cancer researchers to develop programmatic goals and objectives, outcomes, and deliverables for scientific conferences and workshops. The position also requires ongoing collaborations with internal staff across multiple departments (marketing, fundraising, publishing, finance, meeting logistics, etc.) to successfully execute the scientific conferences and workshops according to AACR’s high standards.

Requirements

  • Advanced scientific degree with expertise in basic, translational, and/or clinical cancer research (PhD, MD, MD/PhD, or equivalent) At least 3-5 years relevant research experience at the postdoctoral level or beyond
  • Relevant administrative and/or project management expertise, including managing direct reports, preferably in the non-profit sector
  • Outstanding organizational skills and ability to simultaneously manage multiple diverse workflows
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with large teams of internal and external stakeholders
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills
  • Ability to travel 15% per year
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in scientific writing or grant writing preferred
  • Knowledge of project management principles a plus
  • Proficiency in database management systems a plus

Responsibilities

  • Maintain a working knowledge of cancer research and related sciences and keep abreast of the latest developments in the cancer field
  • Support the Managing Director in the overall management and development of the AACR Conferences and Workshops, working in collaboration with internal and external stakeholders
  • Complete special assignments as assigned
  • Manage aspects of the event data workflow for assigned conferences and workshops, including the electronic submission, review, scheduling, and publication of abstracts and presentations
  • Work with internal team members to develop and communicate program-specific information to a variety of different scientific audiences
  • Work collaboratively with internal team members to develop, maintain, and execute project plans
  • Work collaboratively with internal team members to develop and maintain standard operating procedures for departmental functions
  • Other duties as assigned
