About The Position

NCDPI and NC public school translator positions involve converting written or spoken language (often Spanish) for educational settings, ensuring effective communication between staff, students, and parents. Responsibilities include translating IEP documents, school forms, and providing interpretation for meetings to ensure compliance and access. The School Based Interpreter-Translator is responsible for assisting school personnel, parents and students to communicate academic, family, social, and cultural needs through language support. The employee is also responsible for both oral interpretations and written translations for all school-based language support .

Requirements

  • Basic understanding of functions of public school preferred
  • Basic understanding of NC student accountability standards preferred
  • Experience with public speaking
  • Exceptional organizational skills
  • Ability to speak in Spanish and English to convey or exchange information. Includes giving instructions, assignments and/or directions.
  • Ability to read a variety of correspondence, etc., in English and Spanish.
  • Ability to prepare routine and technical documents.
  • Ability to write, using standard conventions, in English and Spanish.
  • Ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow oral and written instructions in English and Spanish.
  • Ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions.
  • Ability to be adaptable to performing under stress and when confronted with persons acting under stress.
  • Ability to be sensitive to cultural differences among individuals and groups of persons.
  • Ability to talk and hear: (Talking: expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words. Hearing: perceiving nature of sounds by ear).
  • Ability to communicate via telephone.

Responsibilities

  • Translate all school based documents to Spanish.
  • Provide consecutive interpretation for parents and students during parent-teacher meetings, intervention meetings, child and family team meetings, IEP meetings, retention meetings, and any type of meeting that is requested either by the school or from the parents to the school.
  • Develop relationships with Spanish-speaking community to increase comfort to approach their children’s schools in getting all the help and services that are available to them.
  • Be available (either by work cell phone or office phone) to be contacted directly by the parents when they need to communicate a message to their children’s school.
  • Other related duties as assigned by the principal.
