About The Position

School Health Aides serve under the immediate guidance and supervision of a Registered Professional Nurse in the capacity of a nurse-extender. Nurse-extenders provide assistance to the school nurse by assuming routine record-keeping activities, medication administration, and minor first aid duties. The RN is responsible for all nursing care given at assigned campuses. The School Health Aide will assist the RN with the following:

Requirements

  • High School graduate or GED
  • Current CPR/First Aid certification
  • Clerical/computer knowledge and experience
  • A minimum of one year’s experience in some phase of community health, which includes contact with school-age children

Nice To Haves

  • Certification of Nurse’s Aide, Texas preferred but not required

Responsibilities

  • Provide minor emergency and illness care in accordance with ECISD policy.
  • Perform vision, hearing, spinal, and acanthosis nigricans screening in accordance with the Texas Department of Health standards.
  • Administer medications and treatments as ordered by the physician, and which are in accordance with ECISD policy and health care plan provisions.
  • Keep appropriate supplies and equipment on hand to maintain an adequate health care facility.
  • Identify signs and symptoms of disease and make appropriate referral for intervention.
  • Maintain current student records, documenting screening results and other pertinent health information.
  • Maintain current immunizations of each pupil and notify parents of needed immunizations.
  • Document observations/interventions on nurses’ log and/or in computer system.
  • Keep accurate record of medication and treatment administration.
  • Ability to lift 75 lbs. as needed with assistance
  • All other duties as assigned by the Health Services Director
  • Prepare needed materials and provide assistance to supervising nurse for formal/comprehensive health teaching.
  • Assist families in accessing community health care resources.
  • Refer to supervising nurse those situations necessitating professional nursing assessment/intervention.
  • Participate in activities which promote optimal health care and education for students and staff members.
  • Establish and maintain open lines of communication with students, parents, staff and community members.
  • Comply with state, district, and school regulations and policies for school district personnel.
  • Attend and participate in faculty and nursing staff meetings, and accept various committee assignments as requested.
  • Keep supervising nurse and Principal informed of health service concerns and illness trends occurring on campus.
  • Demonstrate a positive and helpful approach in dealing with students and staff members.
  • Maintain a record of attendance and punctuality that contributes to an efficient health services program.
  • Participate in the district staff development program.
  • Demonstrate interest and initiative in professional self-improvement.
