About The Position

The Illinois Shakespeare Festival is seeking applications for Scenic crew for its 2026 summer season. The Festival is a professional repertory theatre company that produces Shakespeare and contemporary plays every summer at the Ewing Cultural Center in Bloomington, Illinois. It hires professional Directors, Designers, Actors, and production personnel and offers a variety of internships to students from Illinois State University and other colleges and universities. The Festival is supported by Illinois State University and the Illinois Shakespeare Festival Society. This posting details several specific scenic crew roles: Scenic Installation and Changeover Supervisor, Scenic Carpenter/Crew, Scenic Charge Artist, and Scenic Artist/Crew. Housing is available at a reduced cost.

Requirements

  • Ability to work well in a fast-paced environment

  • Strong communication skills
  • Scenic carpentry, metalworking, welding, and crew supervisory skills and experience in a professional environment (for Scenic Installation and Changeover Supervisor)
  • Demonstrated metal and scenic fabrication skills (for Scenic Installation and Changeover Supervisor)
  • Ability to read and understand complex construction drawings (for Scenic Installation and Changeover Supervisor and Scenic Carpenter/Crew)
  • Proven success at overseeing and motivating crews (for Scenic Installation and Changeover Supervisor)
  • Significant scenic fabrication experience, preferably in a professional environment (for Scenic Carpenter/Crew)
  • Demonstrated scenic fabrication skills (for Scenic Carpenter/Crew)
  • Significant scenic art experience using designer’s paint elevations (for Scenic Charge Artist and Scenic Artist/Crew)
  • Demonstrated painting and sculpting skills (for Scenic Charge Artist and Scenic Artist/Crew)
  • Excellent communication/leadership skills (for Scenic Charge Artist and Scenic Artist/Crew)

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with metal fabrication (for Scenic Carpenter/Crew)
  • Supervisory experience, preferably in a professional environment (for Scenic Charge Artist)

Responsibilities

  • Supervise crews changing over and maintaining the scenery after the productions open (for Scenic Installation and Changeover Supervisor)
  • Work hands-on during fabricating and fitting scenery for three shows in rep in an outdoor theatre (for Scenic Installation and Changeover Supervisor)
  • Tech/lead young carpenters and interns (for Scenic Installation and Changeover Supervisor)
  • Work on scenic fabrication (for Scenic Carpenter/Crew)
  • Transition to a deck crew and/or changeover crew when tech begins (for full season Scenic Carpenter/Crew hires)
  • Supervise scenic art using designer’s paint elevations (for Scenic Charge Artist)
  • Teach/lead young scenic artists and interns (for Scenic Charge Artist)
  • Work on scenic art using designer’s paint elevations (for Scenic Artist/Crew)
  • Teach interns (for Scenic Artist/Crew)
  • Transition to a deck crew and/or changeover crew when tech begins (for full season Scenic Artist/Crew hires)
