About The Position

This position performs primarily customer service-related tasks, supplemented with technical and recordkeeping duties for the Solid Waste Department. Primary role of position is being the first point of contact for customers visiting our site y checking in customers on computer program and receiving payment. Secondary responsibilities include data entry and answering phones. Assists customers in using the Citizen's Disposal Area, processing area and landfill. Observes loads being brought in for disposal and participates with other staff in Special Waste review process, as needed. Ensures customers are compliant with safety and site regulations. Accurately inputs customer information and other billing information into a customized computer database program. Schedules re-occurring services with site contractors. Completes necessary reports and records on multiple waste programs. Performs minimal light labor duties including cleaning and light snow removal. In this public service position, employee is required to be courteous, cooperative and respectful at all times, with the public and clients. Also establishes and maintains a courteous, cooperative and respectful working relationship with other employees, supervisors and public officials. As directed by Supervisor, Employee is expected to provide support in all divisions of the Solid Waste Department to meet Departmental and County goals. Employee is expected to report to work when scheduled, with minimum use of sick leave, to build up sick leave balance for income protection for unexpected illness. Physical demands: Some time is spent sitting at desk, using talking, judgment, hearing, near vision, fingering for keyboarding, calculators, office equipment and wrapping packages. Occasionally lifts 50 pounds shoulder high and carries for 20 feet, and lifts 25 pounds above head. Reads and writes. Uses oral communication to communicate clearly and concisely with customers. Handles papers and manuals, etc., lifts files, copy paper and other office materials. Sits, stands, bends and reaches intermittently throughout the day. Uses near and far vision for inspecting vehicles and loads. There is frequent exposure to noise, vibrations, unpleasant odors, and to heat, cold and bright sunlight through the open window. Occasionally drives pick-up truck, mower or tractor. Some time is spent lifting, climbing, walking, driving and standing on terrain that can be rough and uneven including in mud and snow and during all weather conditions. Occasionally lifts and moves heavy loads. Occasionally travels to other offices or sites. On occasion, walks quickly to citizen area to support customers

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited high school for GED.
  • Experience and excellent skill in customer service, money handling and computer operations.
  • Ability to stand for an extended period.
  • Ability to work with customers, haulers, contractors, State and County officials and co-workers, in a courteous, constructive, and cheerful manner.
  • Ability to use verbal and judgment skills, and the ability to use assertiveness, problem solving, and dispute resolution skills when appropriate.
  • Ability and willingness to learn modern landfill operations.
  • Ability and willingness to learn to operate a large landfill truck scale.
  • Ability to understand, interpret and precisely follow State DNR regulations and County Landfill ordinances and policies.
  • Ability to make reports and present them both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to county money quickly and accurately and make change, and ability to process credit card transactions.
  • Ability to input information accurately and with reasonable speed on a computer terminal.
  • Flexibility to work a varied schedule and be available for work weekends.
  • Possess a valid driver's license or obtain one within a specified period of time.
  • Must successfully pass criminal record check.

Nice To Haves

  • Preference for experience in some area of solid waste, special waste or landfill operations, but not required.
  • May consider other acceptable combination of training and experience.

  • On own initiative, finds routine office tasks such as photocopying, clean up or other during times when scale activity is minimal.
  • Support site/scale maintenance.
  • Removes litter, mops floors, empties dehumidifiers, changes light bulbs, and performs other custodial functions of the landfill scale/office.
