About The Position

Provides coordination and direction for the organizational safety and preparedness strategy. Evaluates and updates the Safety Management Plan and Emergency Operations Plan in collaboration with leadership. Conducts annual safety and hazard vulnerability assessments. Coordinates drills, emergency exercises, and after-action reports; leads improvement planning. Ensures surveillance systems are in place to identify and mitigate potential safety risks, including equipment, utilities, physical hazards, and environmental concerns. Supports and encourages staff reporting of safety events and near misses. Facilitates or supports root cause analysis following significant safety or emergency events. Leads Safety Committee meetings and develops agendas, minutes, and follow-up actions. Responds to regulatory requirements and standards including, but not limited to: Joint Commission Environment of Care CMS Emergency Preparedness Rule OSHA regulations National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Coordinates fire safety initiatives and life safety procedures in collaboration with Facilities. Organizes and delivers new employee orientation and annual training for safety and disaster preparedness. Monitors professional resources, regulatory updates, and best practices; recommends improvements to leadership. Assists with safety-related purchasing needs and budget input. Maintains professional, respectful communication and models a culture of safe work practices. Participates in required education, performance improvement, and organizational trainings. Maintains confidentiality of patient, resident, employee, and organizational information. Performs other duties as necessary or assigned.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree required in safety, emergency management, public health, environmental health, industrial hygiene, or a related field; Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Three (3) or more years of relevant experience in safety management, emergency preparedness, occupational health, law enforcement, military, fire/EMS, healthcare support services, or a related area.
  • A combination of education and relevant experience may be considered in lieu of the stated degree requirements.
  • Valid driver's license (due to potential emergency response and travel between facilities).
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Effective time management and ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Ability to read and interpret safety regulations, emergency protocols, and standard operating procedures.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with employees, visitors, first responders, and regulatory personnel.
  • Able to prepare written reports, policies, and training materials.
  • Must be able to perform all language functions above in English.
  • Frequently required to stand, walk, sit, talk, and hear.
  • Regularly uses hands to handle, operate, or evaluate equipment and safety tools.
  • Must occasionally lift, move, or carry equipment and supplies up to 30 pounds.
  • Ability to bend, kneel, climb stairs, and access mechanical spaces or non-patient care areas as part of inspections.
  • Ability to respond in person during drills or actual emergency situations, which may include extended walking, standing, or rapid movement.
  • Must maintain awareness of surroundings, visual acuity for inspections, and ability to detect environmental hazards (smoke, spills, alarms, etc.).
  • May be exposed to biohazards, bodily fluids, chemicals, and other occupational hazards.
  • Must have the emotional resilience to respond calmly and effectively in emergency or crisis situations.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with regulatory or accreditation standards related to life safety, emergency planning, or occupational safety preferred.
  • Incident Command System (ICS) / National Incident Management System (NIMS) training preferred or obtained within 12 months of hire.
