About The Position

Safety Officer I: Assists in overseeing a district, division or marine safety program in accordance with the Occupational Safety Division Manual or Rules and Regulations Governing Ferry Operations. Works to create an active interest in accident prevention and the safety program. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details. Safety Officer II: Oversees or assists in overseeing a district, division or marine safety program in accordance with the Occupational Safety Division Manual or Rules and Regulations Governing Ferry Operations. Works to create an active interest in accident prevention and the safety program. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor. Safety Officer III: Oversees or a district, division or marine safety program in accordance with the Occupational Safety Division Manual or Rules and Regulations governing Ferry Operations. Works to create an active interest in accident prevention and the safety program. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Industrial Safety , Industrial Technology, Business Admin or related discipline. Relevant work experience may be substituted for degree on a year per year basis.
  • Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Safety Officer II: 1 YEAR Occupational safety, Industrial hygiene or related work areas.
  • Safety Officer III: 2 YEARS in Occupational safety, Industrial hygiene or other safety-related work activities.
  • Safety Officer III: Must have OR obtain within one year from date of employment, one of the following professional safety designations : (1) Advanced Safety Certificate (ASC); (2 ) General Industry/Construction Industry Outreach Instructor or Certified Safety and Health and Health Official (CSHO); (3) Occupational Health and Safety Technologist (OHST) or Associate Safety Professional (ASP) or Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or (4) equivalent training or certification as determined by the Occupational Safety Division (OCC).

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates safety meetings; usually involves planning, conducting, coordinating schedules and providing literature and audio-visual material.
  • Inspects equipment and work areas.
  • Investigates employee accidents, prepares reports and maintains records; identifies injury types and accident causes, recommends preventative actions and conducts follow-up investigations.
  • Monitors workers' compensation records.
  • Plans, schedules and assists with administering training on safety issues including defensive driving, CPR, first-aid, fleet safety and hazardous materials; maintains applicable training records.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
  • Processes damage property claims and/or assists with tort claims and open records requests.
  • Monitors compliance with material safety data sheet (MSDS) requirements and monitors and recommends updates for Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasures (SPCC) plan.
  • Answers safety-related inquiries and complaints from the public.
  • Performs industrial hygiene testing of departmental operations to ensure compliance with safety and hazardous materials regulations and to minimize employee health risks/exposures.
  • Maintains a comprehensive written hazard communication program for the district; develops local policies, procedures, guidelines and rule interpretations to comply with federal, state and local rules and regulations.
  • Administers the new employee driver's orientation program and the vehicle safety program.
  • Coordinates and schedules employee safety awards and the annual Safety Awards Banquet/Truck Roadeo.
  • Develops localized policies, procedures, guidelines and rule interpretations to comply with federal, state and local rules and regulations.
  • Processes damage property claims and/or assists with tort claims and open records requests.
