About The Position

The Safety Assistant will support the Environmental Health & Safety Manager in developing, organizing, and implementing comprehensive safety and health programs. This includes ensuring compliance with federal and state regulations, promoting safe work practices, and maintaining safety records.

Requirements

  • Accident prevention methods and techniques
  • Understanding of the construction industry and equipment
  • Industrial and construction safety principles, including OSHA requirements
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the use and proper safety processes for company equipment and materials
  • Workers' compensation rules and procedures
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or related software
  • Occupational hazards and safety precautions in construction sites
  • Multi-tasking in an environment with rapidly changing priorities
  • Coordinate and organize
  • Analyzing and evaluating facts and evidence to formulate sound conclusions
  • Interpreting data and preparing reports
  • Maintaining safety and health records and developing forms
  • Identifying and solving problems quickly and effectively
  • Effective communication skills, both orally and in writing, using technical and non-technical language
  • Ability to persuade others and garner support for safety programs
  • Valid Driver's license
  • Overnight travel 30% of the time.
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in occupational safety, Safety Engineering, Industrial Hygiene, or a closely related field.
  • Or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work.
  • OSHA 30 Certification required.

Nice To Haves

  • OSHA 510 Certification preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect work and log activities in safety tracking software and job sites to correct hazardous conditions and ensure compliance with safety regulations.
  • Assist in the investigation of accidents to determine root causes and implement preventative measures.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with superintendents, project managers, subcontractors, and suppliers to ensure uniform adherence to safety policies and procedures.
  • Promote safety through direct interactions with employees, instructing them on identifying workplace hazards and safe work habits.
  • Facilitate and verify that toolbox meetings are taking place on projects.
  • Perform on-site safety audits, review audits with job site superintendents, and distribute and obtain corrective actions findings to relevant personnel.
  • Provide expert guidance on best practices for identifying and reducing exposure to dangerous conditions.
  • Tour and communicate with workers to identify safety risks and concerns.
  • Assist in developing and implementing systems to report, monitor, and correct safety problems.
  • Work proactively to provide a safe working environment through training and guidance via safety bulletins, documentation, and training meetings.
  • Maintain knowledge of hazard prevention, safety best practices, equipment, and developments.
  • Facilitate training programs covering safety and health practices.
  • Safety inventory control and distribution.
  • Will oversee the company's fleet and will report any violations and keep within DOT compliance in the state of Iowa and Nebraska
  • Gather and Submit company accident reports to the EHS Manager
  • Assist the Environmental Health & Safety Manager with additional duties as required.
  • Perform other duties of similar nature and level as assigned.
