About The Position

Ensures that all residents’ rights, including fair and equitable treatment, self determination, individuality, privacy, property and civil rights including the right to voice complaints are well established and protected at all times .Complies with all company and departmental policies and procedures .Reads prescriptions, measures arterial blood gases, and reviews resident information to evaluate resident condition .Sets up and operates devices such as mechanical ventilators, therapeutic gas administration apparatus, environmental control systems, and aerosol generators, following specified parameters of treatment. Conducts physician prescribed treatments of a routine nature operating Intermittent Positive Pressure Breathing (IPPB) Machine, various oxygen devices, nebulizer and ultrasonic nebulizer in order to administer prescribed medicinal vapors and gases, humidity, and various oxygen concentrations to resident’s respiratory system. With appropriate authorizations, performs arterial puncture, operates blood gas analyzer measuring and determining acid-base balance efficiency of ventilation, and metabolism of respiratory system. Monitors resident's physiological responses to therapy, such as vital signs, arterial blood gases, and blood chemistry changes, and consults with physician if adverse reactions occur. Performs chest physical therapy treatments involving percussion, postural drainage, and suctioning in order to mobilize secretions and mucus in lungs and to clear airway blockage in respiratory system. Performs pulmonary function studies determining volume, distribution, and movement of air in respiratory system.. Makes regular rounds, checking resident’s oxygen equipment, replacing humidifiers, as necessary, as well as spot-checking other respiratory therapy equipment on a timely basis.. Explains purpose and procedure of treatments, tests and equipment to residents in order to gain cooperation and allay fears. Relays blood analysis results to physician.Maintains charts that contain residents' pertinent identification and therapy information as well as ventilation tracking log. Records all pertinent information of treatments, and resident response to treatments, on respiratory care records and resident chart. Inspects, cleans, sterilizes, packages, tests and maintains respiratory therapy equipment to ensure equipment is functioning safely and efficiently, ordering repairs when necessary. Performs preventive maintenance and repair of equipment as needed.Uses knowledge of growth and development principles to anticipate care needs of residents.  Reports treatments to be conducted and condition of residents to relief personnel. May provide emergency care, including artificial respiration, external cardiac massage and assistance with cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Ensures adequate maintenance of ventilation during cardio-pulmonary resuscitation. Attends IDT and other meetings as required.
