Position Summary: The Robotic Welding Programmer is responsible for programming, optimizing, and maintaining robotic welding systems used in the production of large weldments. This position supports welding automation by developing and maintaining programs, improving welding processes, helping with coordinating tooling needs, training operators, and supporting production teams. The Robotic Welding Programmer also assists in evaluating weld quality, administering weld tests, and collaborating with the Safety Manager to identify and mitigate safety hazards in robotic weld cells.

Requirements

  • Strong understanding of robotic welding processes and programming (off-line and teach pendant).
  • Knowledge of ANSI/AWS D1.1 Structural Welding Codes and related welding standards.
  • Proficiency in blueprint reading, interpretation of weld symbols, and GD&T drawings.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively across departments.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities.
  • Sense of urgency and commitment to meeting production deadlines.
  • Strong attention to detail and continuous-improvement mindset.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, Access) and familiarity with ERP systems such as JD Edwards.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate degree in manufacturing technology, welding, or automation preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of welding experience and 3 years of robotic welding programming experience (preferably with large weldments in a heavy manufacturing setting).
  • Experience with IGM, ABB, Yaskawa (Motoman), FANUC, OTC, or similar robotic systems required.
  • Experience with off-line programming software (3D Max, Delfoi, or equivalent).

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with CAD/CAM or 3D simulation software is a plus.
  • Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Program and maintain robotic weld systems per current engineering specifications.
  • Develop and update standard operating procedures, set up documentation, and robot-specific weld programs for weld cells.
  • Calibrate robot systems to maintain program accuracy and weld consistency.
  • Coordinate tooling and fixture requirements with engineering and tooling teams to ensure optimal performance.
  • Identify and recommend process improvements to enhance quality, safety, and efficiency including improving process flow and cell balance within the robotic weld cells.
  • Collaborate with Maintenance, Manufacturing Engineering, and Operations to implement process and quality improvements.
  • Train and support robotic weld operators in proper setup, operation, and maintenance procedures.
  • Serve as a technical resource for troubleshooting robotic weld systems and assisting production with weld quality issues.
  • Administer and score weld tests for new welder applicants as part of the hiring process.
  • Support the development of operator training materials and continuous learning programs for robotic welding personnel.
  • Identify safety hazards and communicate improvement opportunities to the Safety Manager and leadership; Participate in identifying and developing corrective actions as needed.
  • Ensure all robotic systems meet company safety standards and comply with applicable codes and regulations.
  • Work with the team to resolve quality problems, establish consistent welding procedures, and maintain compliance with welding standards.
  • Troubleshoot robotic weld systems and coordinate with maintenance to resolve issues and prevent unplanned downtime.
  • Provide technical assistance to Maintenance and Engineering for troubleshooting, calibration, and preventative maintenance of robotic systems.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of programs, revisions, and tooling calibrations for each welding cell.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives related to cost reduction, process reliability, and automation efficiency.
  • Other duties as assigned.
