About The Position

Under the direction of the Senior Director of Access Services, the Registered Nurse (RN) will improve patient outcomes and promote wellness by navigating and performing the following duties: nurse triage, insurance prior authorizations of clinic in office procedures, patient appointment scheduling, referral management of internal and external patient referrals, and complete post discharge follow up calls for given patient populations. The RN will work closely with service lines, providers, and clinics to provide suitable and timely patient follow up. The RN will be responsible for reviewing, requesting, and submitting clinical documentation as appropriate. This position will be required to identify and differentiate between routine, urgent, or emergent/life-threatening symptoms in order to provide safe and timely dispositions. The RN will respond to patient and provider inquiries, prioritizing responses and routing urgent situations as necessary to providers. Maintains accurate and appropriate documentation and follows patient privacy in accordance with HIPPA and UAMS policies and procedures. Performs to the level of a licensed registered nurse as dictated by the Arkansas Nurse Practice Act and UAMS. The RN will utilize decision making software including evidenced-based triage protocols, the application of a variety of procedures, policies and/or precedents relating to both the standards and procedures of the nursing profession and those established by the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited Nursing Program with an Associate's Degree, Nursing Diploma, Bachelor's in Nursing, or Master's in Nursing
  • Valid RN License
  • Minimum of 1 year Registered Nursing experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing withThree (3) years of nursing experience
  • Two (2) years of experience in Nurse Triage, Appointment Scheduling, Patient Access, Clinic nursing, or any combination of the four.
  • Obtain ACLS certification within 1 year of hire date.

Responsibilities

  • Provides accurate and timely patient assessments, documents detailed and accurate information in the electronic medical record (EMR), and submits accurate documentation for payer prior authorizations while in a call center setting.
  • Manages internal and external patient referrals by assessing the health concerns and symptoms via clinical documentation review.
  • Provides telephonic nurse triage of patients actively having symptoms when calling in to the call center.
  • Completes patient assessments, provides patient education, and at times provides crisis intervention.
  • Responds to patient questions appropriately while providing reassurance, responding to concerns, and utilizing evidence-based care advice.
  • Provides and documents accurate and detailed information to include patient education in EMR (Epic).
  • Utilizes current nursing practice to provide patient-focused care while exemplifying service excellence, care, concern, respect, and cooperation.
  • Acts as a resource and mentor for ABC managers, supervisors, and access coordinators, as well as new nurses to the department.
  • Acts as clinical liaison between providers and patient payer sources to obtain prior authorizations for in-office procedures and medications.
  • Collaborates with providers and clinic nurses to provide patient-centered care by utilizing effective communication.
  • Documents accurately and appropriately in the patient's medical record.
  • Reports and escalates variances in patient care appropriately.
  • Demonstrates commitment to patients and their families by advocating and continually striving to provide excellent, safe, and competent care.
  • Practices with empathy and compassion while providing for inherent dignity and respect without prejudice.
  • Actively acts supportively and as a resource to others.
  • Facilitates development and implementation of nursing practice by utilizing evidence-based practices and complying with UAMS and American Nursing Association (ANA) nursing standards.
  • Participates in recruitment, training, and retention of staff within the department.
  • Utilizes and applies critical thinking skills, technical knowledge, and experience to complete assigned tasks.
  • Completes responsibilities promptly through effective organization, prioritization, delegation, and time management.
  • Exhibits the ability to multitask, perform, and execute solutions to complex and occasional emergent situations.
  • Maintains clinical competencies specific tothe practice area.
  • Improves practice and performance by utilizing constructive feedback and evaluating personal performance based on professional practice standards.
  • Other duties as assigned.
