The Preoperative Assessment Clinic within Perioperative Services supports patients scheduled for surgical and procedural care across multiple MUSC Health locations. A critical function of the clinic is early identification of patients requiring preoperative assessment, specialty review, or additional coordination prior to scheduling or surgery. The RN Specialty Coordinator – Referral Queue serves as the clinical owner of the preoperative referral queue. This role performs advanced chart review, applies specialty-specific criteria, determines appropriate preoperative pathways, and coordinates next steps to ensure patients are accurately routed, appropriately scheduled, and prepared for surgery. This position plays a key role in reducing inappropriate scheduling, preventing late discoveries, and supporting safe, efficient surgical throughput. This role works in close partnership with non-clinical scheduling staff, providing clinical guidance and decision support to ensure patients are scheduled appropriately and efficiently.
