About The Position

To provide safe, high-quality care to critically ill or injured patients in the pre-hospital or inter- hospital settings. The critical care transport nurse will work as a team member in conjunction with the paramedic and EMT in both field situations and interfacility hospital transports. Provides ongoing monitoring and management of the critically ill or injured during transport.

Requirements

  • Education: Associate's degree in nursing (ADN). RN must be able to successfully complete the hospital/PTN professional nurse orientation in a timely manner. RN must be able to attain all health requirements as identified by the organization (i.e., PPD, respiratory training, and vaccines as appropriate).
  • Skills: Ability to work independently and make decisions away from the controlled hospital environment. Must be able to understand directions, communicate and respond, requires effective interpersonal skills. Must be able to communicate effectively and have excellent public relations skills. Must be able to maintain composure in stressful situations. Must be able to tolerate exposure to dust, diesel, jet fuel, aircraft/engine fumes, chemicals, temperature changes, and exposure to blood borne pathogens and bodily fluids. Must be able to remain functional in a moving vehicle and aircraft. Must be able to read maps, GPS units, and follow directions. Must be able to input and retrieve information from a computer.
  • Years of Experience: Minimum one (1) year required as an RN in the Emergency Department or ICU setting.
  • License: Must be current Licensed RN in Ohio and must obtain Michigan RN licensure upon completion of orientation.
  • Certification: BCLS, ACLS, NRP Advanced, PALS, Advanced Trauma Course. Must obtain one (1) advance certification within two (2) years of hire CTRN, CFRN, CCRN or CEN. Must obtain Ohio EMT Certification and Michigan EMT licenses within six (6) months of hire.

Responsibilities

  • All duties listed below are essential unless noted otherwise
  • The Critical Care Transport Nurse demonstrates a professional commitment to patients, team members, hospital physicians, nurses, EMT's, unit aids, law enforcement/fire department personnel. The critical care transport nurse supports the mission and values of the Promedica Health system, while providing quality service in a safe and therapeutic environment.
  • Demonstrates a continuing advancement of knowledge and competencies through didactic and skills education. Responsible for continuous professional development, maintain certification and card classes, and contributes to the development and implementation of unit goals.
  • Documents treatment interventions, assessment, and medications within the EPCR concisely and precisely.
  • Treats and stabilizes the patients need in the field or at transferring medical facilities, and ensures the patient's needs are met, reassessed, and treated continuously until the patient is delivered to a designated treatment facility.
  • Maintains regulatory agency requirements and complies with Promedica Metro and Promedica Transportation Networks policies, procedures, and protocols and is accountable for their actions. Supports and adheres to the State of Ohio and Michigan. Maintains certifications as required by PTN and state.
  • Represents Promedica Transportation Network through participation in outreach efforts and teaching CEs at local community EMS, fire stations, aviation and/or quality improvement meetings and/or continuing education programs as assigned.
  • Demonstrates skill competency and safety in performing the technical procedures and treatments required to meet the nursing care needs of the patient. I.E. Calculation and initiation and maintenance of IV drips, mechanical ventilation, Impella devices, balloon pump therapy, cardiac monitoring, recognition of 12 lead injury patterns, arterial line management, and other treatments and procedures required by PTN standards.
  • Performs initial and ongoing quarterly intubation competencies under direction of the medical director, educators, and clinical manager to demonstrate proficiency with the following airway management skills (basic and advanced) for adult, pediatrics, and neonates. (Bag-valve-mask ventilation with basic airway adjuncts (oropharyngeal airway, nasopharyngeal airway), endotracheal intubation (oral, nasal, rapid sequence induction), cricothyroidotomy (needle and/or surgical), Alternative Airway Management (I-Gel), Bougie utilization, and Ventilator Support/ Ventilator Management utilizing CPAP, NIV, ASV, PSIMV, PCV, APV, APVsimv as well as troubleshooting ventilator alarms.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.
