The Forensic/SANE (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner) unit at Cleveland Clinic is staffed by nurses who are specially trained to care for individuals of all ages who have experienced or witnessed any type of violence. This violence may include sexual assault, child abuse, interpersonal violence, elder abuse, or human trafficking. A caregiver in this position works variable hours between 3:00am and 3:00pm or 3:00pm and 3:00am.

Requirements

  • Complete an IAFN approved SANE Adolescent/Adult course within 60 days of hire
  • Complete an IAFN approved SANE Pediatric course within 1 year of hire for incumbents hired after April 1, 2018
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross
  • Current state licensure as Registered Nurse (RN)
  • One year of recent RN work experience

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing (BSN)
  • Trauma, Women’s Health or Pediatric experience

Responsibilities

  • Collect forensic evidence and/or forensic photography as requested and will maintain a chain of custody for such evidence.
  • Provide enhanced follow-up services, resources and safety plans that are discussed and implemented before the patient is discharged.
  • Perform speculum exams and/or pediatric assessments under the supervision of a LIP.
  • Utilize a thorough knowledge on collecting and managing forensic evidence with a Sexual Assault Exam Collection (SAEC) kit and a Drug Facilitated Sexual Assault kit (DFSA).
  • Interact and collaborate with medical and nursing staff, law enforcement, prosecutors, protective services, advocates and other agencies as needed.
  • Provide court testimony as needed.
  • Participate in an on-call schedule, as determined by SANE coordinator and respond to the designated facility within one hour.
  • Participate in community awareness programs and professional organizations.
  • Travel to other Cleveland Clinic Facilities as needed.
