The Forensic Nurse Examiner (FNE) provides specialized, trauma-informed forensic nursing care to patients who have experienced abuse or violence. This includes sexual assault survivors of all ages, victims of elder abuse, intimate partner violence, domestic violence, child abuse, and strangulation. The FNE also performs suspect examinations and serves as an expert witness in legal proceedings related to forensic exams. Please note that this role is a Banner Staffing Services position. Banner Staffing Services Positions do not include medical or PTO benefits. Schedule & Work Expectations Orientation: 8 shifts (8 hours each) or 6 shifts (12 hours each). After orientation: Minimum of 6 shifts (8 hours) or 4 shifts (12 hours) per month, based on department needs. POSITION SUMMARY This position assesses, plans, implements, evaluates and documents nursing care of patients in accordance with organizational policies and in accordance with standards of professional nursing practice utilizing the framework for professional nursing practice and development. This position is accountable for the quality of nursing services delivered by self or others who are under their direction. This position utilizes specialized knowledge, judgment, and nursing skills necessary to assess data and plan, provide and evaluate care appropriate to the physical and developmental age of assigned patients.

Requirements

  • Must possess a current, valid RN license in state of practice, temporary/interim RN license in state of practice, or compact RN licensure for current state of practice.
  • Certification for BLS required.
  • In Arizona, ACLS certification required and PALS certification required within 12 months of hire.
  • Current TNCC (Trauma Nurse Core Curriculum) or obtained within 12 months of employment.
  • Completion of Adult/Adolescent SANE didactic training thru the International Association of Forensic Nurses (IAFN) or Trible Forensic Health Network (must provide certification of completion of course).
  • In Colorado, completion of Adult/Adolescent and Pediatric SANE didactic training through the International Association of Forensic Nurses (IAFN).
  • Minimum two years nursing experience.
  • Must maintain clinical performance competencies appropriate to the area in which they work as demonstrated through annual validations.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Preferred SANE-A/SANE-P certification.
  • Clinical experience to include, adult exams, SANE exams, violent crime observations.
  • Specialty experience in women’s health, emergency department, intensive care, public health or psychiatry, with demonstrated autonomy and professional judgment in nursing practice.
  • Additional related education and/or experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assesses patient physical, psychological, social, spiritual, educational, developmental, cultural and discharge planning needs.
  • Formulates a plan of care, including the discharge plan, utilizing assessment data and patient, family and health team input.
  • Implements the plan of care through direct patient care, coordination, delegation and supervision of the activities of the health care team.
  • Evaluates the patient's and family's response to care and teaching and revises the plan of care as needed.
  • Documents assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation in the patient record.
  • Provides care based on the best evidence available and may participate in research activities within clinical practice.
  • Contributes to society through activities that lead to excellent patient outcomes through timely, effective, efficient, equitable, and safe care.
  • Interacts with all levels of staff in a variety of departments, physicians, patients, families and external contacts, such as employees of other health care institutions, community providers and agencies, concerning the health care of the patient.
  • Attend court proceedings deemed significant for observation by leadership.
  • Actively engaged in conducting SANE exams, with no lapse of service greater than six months.
  • Participate in periodic case review, to include documentation and photographs.
  • Maintain clinical education hours, relevant to sexual assault, forensics, or adolescent subspecialty.
