About The Position

The Diabetes Nurse Educator (DNE) is responsible for diabetes care and education to patients through assessment of diabetes needs, development and implementation of educational care plans for patients. Education will be provided to patients within the diabetes education program as ordered by a healthcare provider (physician and nurse practitioner) in the outpatient setting. Inpatient education will be provided to patients by referrals, orders and criteria set to meet HFAP guidelines. The DNE must be able to provide accurate diabetes education to a wide population taking into consideration age, socioeconomic level, cultural background, literacy/education level. The DNE demonstrates knowledge by utilization of best practice guidelines using Standards of Care and Clinical Practice Guidelines. The DNE will be able to provide training to patients checking blood sugar and administering insulin with use of a variety of blood sugar monitoring systems and insulin delivery methods. The DNE may provide diabetes information to peers, healthcare workers, students, and the public in a variety of forums such as media interviews, lectures, seminars, social media, and written articles, as needed to promote diabetes education.

Requirements

  • Certified Diabetes Educator and/or 15 hour CEU in diabetes annually
  • Certified Diabetes Educator or 15 hours Diabetes related CEUs annually by transcript due date.
  • Current Missouri Registered Nurse license or current Registered Nurse license from a compact state. If a compact license is held, it must be in the nurse’s state of residence.
