About The Position

The RHEL System Administrator is responsible for managing and maintaining Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) environments within AWS GovCloud for Department of Navy systems. The ideal candidate ensures the availability, security, and performance of RHEL systems while adhering to strict Department of Defense (DoD) cybersecurity standards and compliance requirements. This role requires a blend of deep Linux expertise, cloud infrastructure management, and a systematic approach to troubleshooting and security remediation. As with any position, additional expectations exist. Some of these include, but are not limited to, adhering to normal working hours, meeting deadlines, following company policies as outlined by the Employee Handbook, communicating regularly with assigned supervisor(s), staying focused on the assigned tasks, and completing other tasks as assigned.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field
  • Proven experience in AWS Cloud systems administration, including EC2, EBS, S3, and CloudFormation
  • Expertise in RHEL management, including configuration, upgrades, migration, and security patching
  • Experience provisioning and sustaining Kubernetes Clusters using AWS EKS
  • Hands-on experience with STIG application and remediating vulnerabilities reported in ACAS
  • Experience with scripting (Python, Bash) and configuration management tools like Ansible
  • Active DoD Secret clearance or the ability to obtain one
  • If applicable: If you are or have been recently employed by the U.S. government by the U.S. government, a post-employment ethics letter will be required if employment with VSolvit is offered

Nice To Haves

  • Active DoD Secret or Top Secret clearance
  • Experience installing and configuring Antivirus agents (McAfee/Trellix, MDE) in Linux environments
  • Knowledge of networking protocols (TCP/IP, DNS, Load balancing)
  • Certifications such as Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA) or AWS Certified SysOps Administrator

Responsibilities

  • Manage AWS GovCloud resources, including EC2 instances, VPC, Security Groups, and Elastic Block Storage (EBS)
  • Configure and optimize AWS services such as S3 and Elastic Kubernetes Service (EKS) to support RHEL systems
  • Collaborate with the Cloud Hosting Provider (CSP) to ensure proper installation, configuration, patching, and upgrades of RHEL
  • Collaborate with the CSP to ensure all inbound and outbound traffic flows through the DISA Cloud Access Point (CAP) in compliance with DoD security policies
  • Manage logical volumes (LVM), file systems, and ensure regular backups and recovery testing using AWS Backup services
  • Implement and maintain security controls to meet Risk Management Framework (RMF) and DoD compliance requirements
  • Apply Security Technical Implementation Guides (STIGs) to RHEL systems and collaborate with IA teams to remediate findings from ACAS scans
  • Monitor system, event, and file integrity logs to detect and respond to anomalies
  • Utilize security tools including McAfee ePO Orchestrator, Microsoft Defender Endpoint (MDE), and AWS WAF for intrusion prevention
  • Develop Bash/Python scripts or use Ansible to automate routine tasks and improve system efficiency
  • Monitor system resources (CPU, memory, disk) and utilize tools like AWS CloudWatch or Splunk to ensure proactive issue detection
  • Resolve complex hardware and software issues, performing thorough root cause analysis to prevent recurrence
  • Maintain detailed documentation of configurations, runbook procedures, and system health reports
