About The Position

As a member of Residential Life, the Resident Director is a full-time, live-in staff member who will provide daily support to student living in student housing and will support the education priorities of the department in maintaining a safe, educational living environment. They will be able to assume responsibility for supervising student leaders, providing crisis support, and keeping the program operational. The Resident Director reports directly to the Associate Director of Residential Life. This position will support the educational priorities and programmatic goals of Residential Life through supervision and development of student staff and advising student leadership. This position requires a high degree of student contact and ability to manage periods of high stress. The Resident Director must be able to respond to crisis situations and be able to think critically to address incidents. must be able to support a student in crisis and possess sensitivity to and understanding of diversity and equity issues as it relates to student housing. This role will ensure that the student housing program is operating efficiently, keeping student safety and well-being at the forefront and will administer and implement university and housing policies and procedures and a fair and thoughtful manner. The Resident Director will be aware of safety information and will disseminate as needed to residents and will contribute to students’ learning and development.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Education, Student Services, Higher Ed Administration
  • At least one year of recent (within the past 3 years) experience supervising or advising college-aged student staff or group/club from varied background
  • Ability to develop administrative systems to accomplish multiple tasks in an efficient manner, set priorities, and work well under pressure of deadlines
  • Ability to interact and communicate, orally and in writing, in an effective and approachable manner with students, staff, parents, and faculty from diverse backgrounds
  • Ability to work in a team environment and develop cooperative relationships with others
  • Willing and able to live on-campus in an apartment
  • Willing and able to participate in an on-call RD on duty rotation providing coverage 7 days a week, 24-hours a day, including holidays
  • Willing and able to work extended hours during peak times of the academic year
  • Willing and able to work evening and occasional weekends throughout the year

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree in student development, higher education administration, or related field from an accredited college or university
  • One year of professional experience in college or university student services (graduate internship may apply towards professional experience)
  • Demonstrated experience working with traditionally underrepresented groups
  • Experience living or working in a college residence hall strongly preferred
  • Broad knowledge of university student population issues, including multicultural student needs, alcohol/drugs, safety and security, and health concerns in a university environment, along with strategies to positively support and impact students
  • Demonstrated commitment to and knowledge of student development and academic success
  • Demonstrated ability to work collegially and collaboratively with diverse internal and external constituencies
  • Demonstrated commitment to, and experience successfully advocating for, inclusion and the value of a multicultural campus community is desired

Responsibilities

  • Work with a diverse student population to create an inclusive and welcoming environment using our Residential Curriculum model and the curricular approach which provides a plan for learning and development for residential students
  • Promote and develop a collaborative environment between residents and UW Bothell community
  • Foster an environment which promotes and supports diversity and identity development
  • Oversee the organization and implementation of activities and events designed to build and sustain a sense of community among residents
  • Organize, publicize, and facilitate regular community meetings for the apartment complexes
  • Encourage residents to get involved in leadership opportunities at the community and campus level
  • Work with the Residence Hall Association (RHA) to develop education and social programs for community development
  • Promote diverse and appropriate developmental activities to meet the needs of residents through community introduction, interaction, involvement, influence, investment, and identity
  • Provide academic outreach to students who need additional academic support in the transition to college
  • Select, train and supervise a diverse staff of undergraduate student employees, may include Resident Advisors (RA), Apartment Advisors (AA), and Desk Assistants (DA), in developing communities for and responding to the needs of the residents
  • Facilitate weekly staff meetings and one-on-one meetings with the Resident Advisor team
  • Support RA job performance goals; provide recognition for positive job performance; and implement the departmental performance management process to address concerns
  • Plan and implement in-service activities that serve as on-the-job training and that promote opportunities for personal growth and development
  • Recruit, train and advise, a diverse staff of undergraduate students leaders and Residence Hall Association Executive Board Members, in developing communities for and advocating for residents
  • Oversee the RHA budget and ensure spending is aligned with university policy
  • Develop student leadership skills through program and event planning, advocacy work and skill building
  • Consult and work in collaboration with Capstone Management staff to assess and address building, community, and individual student needs
  • Manage opening and closing procedures according to established procedures
  • Coordinate a life safety program within the residence hall. This includes dissemination of information, supervising regular fire drills, maintaining student awareness of emergency procedures and coordinating other activities pertinent to hall safety
  • Participate in facilitating room changes, room reassignments, and occupancy reports
  • Establish a RA duty schedule and ensure that rounds are completed by RAs
  • Refer residents to services and supports both at the university and within the community
  • Serve as the initial hearing officer for housing policy violations involving residential students
  • Facilitate educational meetings with students emphasizing personal responsibility and an understanding of how one’s behavior impacts self and others
  • Utilize educational sanctioning in accordance with established guidelines
  • Facilitate educational workshops for students found in violation of the housing agreement
  • Manage student conduct caseload efficiently and effectively; maintain confidential records with high attention to detail
  • Consult with and refer cases to the Assistant Director of Student Conduct as appropriate
  • Participate in an on-duty rotation throughout the calendar year to respond to incidents and emergencies as they occur
  • Understand and implement the University’s protocols for responding to emergencies and crises
  • Appropriately collaborate and consult with other Student Affairs professionals regarding students needing additional support and resources
  • Provide necessary follow-up with students, campus services, and parents as necessary
