About The Position

A Resident Assistant is responsible for positively fostering a high-quality living and learning experience for residents. The primary responsibility of a Resident Assistant is to act as a facilitator for the community and to enhance the academic, social, educational, intellectual, physical, vocational, cultural, and environmental development of each of their residents. The Resident Assistant represents the community and acts as a role model for students.

Requirements

  • High school diploma.
  • Current student at Queen College and maintain full-time enrollment.
  • Sophomore class standing prior to commencement of RA term.
  • Good standing with Queens College and the Summit Apartments (i.e. no judicial probation, outstanding financial obligations, etc.)
  • Maintain cumulative GPA of 2.5 prior to and during RA term.
  • Sophomore class standing prior to commencement of RA term.
  • Availability for the entire academic year (BOTH Fall and Spring semesters).
  • Demonstrate proficiency in verbal communication and possess strong customer service skills.
  • Must have troubleshooting and diagnostic skills; and a willingness to learn.

Responsibilities

  • Identifyyour residents and know where they live within the first three weeks of the semester.
  • Notify supervisor of roommate conflictsimmediatelyandassistwith roommate mediation sessions/ contracts.
  • Be available to residents andmaintainhighlevel of visibility in the buildings and community.
  • Encourage residents to take responsibility for incidents and events in the community.
  • Maintain a positive building community through open communication and programming.
  • Identifyandassistresidentswithpersonal, academic, wellness, or other special issues.
  • Respond to and report behavior that is inappropriate, discriminatory, or harassing in nature (racial, ethnic, religious, ability, gender, and/or sexual identity).
  • Be familiar with The Summit Rules and Regulations, Queens College and CUNY guidelines andpoliciesand the Resident Assistant Manual.
  • Interpret and enforcecommunity andinstitution’sregulations and policies.
  • Learn and implement building-wide emergency response procedures.
  • Complete andsubmitIncident Reports as well as duty logs following each duty shift.
  • Respond to situations needing attention.
  • Observe residents whoidentifyemotional, relationship, psychological,academicor social problems. Intervene appropriately or report as needed.
  • Coordinate and complete social or educational programsfor community based on residential programming model.
  • Attend and support 3 fellow RA programs per semester.
  • Attend and support Resident Appreciation events as scheduled.
  • Attend and support Campus-wide, Largescale, and Campus Partner events as scheduled or assigned.
  • Complete Intentional Interaction requirements as assigned.
  • Complete 2 bulletin boards persemester,1 must be educational.
  • Complete 1 set of door tags per semester.
  • Encourage and involve residents to develop and implement programs.
  • Complete andsubmita Program Proposal and flyer for program by given deadline.
  • Evaluate and complete Program Evaluation within 24 hours of program completion.
  • Assist with room condition assessments prior to Move-In and after Move-Out each semester.
  • Assist with the opening and closing of the buildings.
  • Conduct health,safetyand maintenance inspections each semester and follow-up accordingly.
  • Report maintenance concerns for your floor and the buildings.
  • Complete other facility management responsibilities as assigned.
  • Participate in training and administrative tasks which occurapproximately two weeks prior to Opening Day for the Fall semester,one weekprior to the start of the Spring semesterand after classes endfor both semesters.
  • Perform administrative duties in a thorough andtimelymanner, including, but not limited to incident reports, occupancy checks each semester, damage billing, surveys, and reporting of maintenance issues.
  • Participate in RAselection, Move-in/Move-out, RA Training,OpenHouses, Homecoming and other events as assigned.
  • Attend all in-services, meetings, and events as assigned. This willgenerally includebi-weeklymeetingwithsupervisorand weekly staff meetings.
  • Be present in the office as scheduled toassistwith residents’ customer service needs and other office administrative tasks.
  • Distributing resident packages.
  • Assisting residents with work order requests.
  • Checking in/out loan keys to residents.
  • Enforcing policies / procedures of the residence halls and the university (including campus,stateand federal regulations).
  • Other tasks as assigned.
  • Staff coverage/duty will berequiredduring academic calendar break periods (holidays and extended time).
  • Participate in an on-call duty rotation with RA staff after business hours on varying days including weekdays weekends and evenings(requires walking through all buildings and holding/responding to a duty cell phone overnight)
  • Pick-up and return duty equipment at assigned times.

  • Resident Assistants (RAs) receive a single efficiency apartment (valued at $9,600.00 per semester), early class registration for both fall and spring semesters, and 4 hours of work per week at a rate of $17.00 per hour.
