About The Position

Through intentional relationship and community building, the Department of Residence Life provides an inclusive and supportive educational living environment where students develop skills and knowledge to think critically, act wisely, and work skillfully to advance the common good. Resident Advisors are thoughtful, inclusive, present, and morally responsible peer leaders. RAs express these values and characteristics through community building, resident interaction, student leader education & development, and administrative responsibilities. RAs are committed to furthering student learning grounded in St. Thomas' mission and convictions. The RA position is focused on connection and relationship building; RAs must be willing and motivated to engage, connect with, and outreach to residents. RAs will promote student learning through implementation of a variety of educational strategies to achieve the Tommie Advantage learning goals: self-understanding, connecting, embracing our differences, practice holistic well-being, and acting wisely.

Requirements

  • Must maintain a term and cumulative GPA of 2.50 or above
  • Must not be on Conduct Probation
  • Must maintain a full academic load during time in the position (12 or more credits)
  • Must be an undergraduate student
  • Fully vaccinated for COVID-19 or elligible for a legally required medical or religious exemption

Responsibilities

  • Strive to foster an inclusive environment and sense of belonging for all residents
  • Be present and actively engaged with their residential community
  • Facilitate connection among residents through events and other engagement opportunities
  • Promote student learning for residents through facilitated community meetings, roommate and community conflict resolution, community communications, and other Tommie Advantage strategies
  • Support residents in building interdependent relationships and practicing accountability in their communities
  • Assist in disseminating information to keep residents fully aware of learning opportunities, policies, news, & procedures
  • Create and maintain virtual community through a group chat
  • Understand, create, and maintain an environment that supports academic achievement and success
  • Confront behaviors not in accordance with the student code of conduct and community standards
  • Appropriately use professional authority while maintaining respectful relationships with residents
  • Demonstrate an understanding of diversity, equity, inclusion, & belonging in order to effectively serve, communicate with, and advocate for all students in our residential population
  • Engage in intentional, ongoing, meaningful connections with residents in your community, including 1:1 conversations and informal touch points
  • Support residents and refer them to appropriate campus resources for social, academic, and personal issues
  • Assist residents in listening with empathy and navigating conflict in a healthy manner
  • Promptly contact and connect with residents as requested by supervisor, our department, or the University of St. Thomas
  • Communicate effectively, including engaging in constructive & respectful feedback with Community Director (CD)/Graduate Student Assistant (GSA) & student leader team
  • Collaborate in a team-focused work environment
  • Manage position's time requirements and student responsibilities effectively
  • Complete relevant paperwork and tasks effectively and in a timely manner (i.e., Roompact forms, weekly reports, incident reports, maintenance requests, etc.)
  • Execute duty responsibilities effectively (i.e., serve at hall/area desk, complete duty rounds, submit duty logs, address policy concerns)
  • Assist in preparing and maintaining the living environment for residents (i.e., setting beds, arranging furniture, organizing common spaces, replacing room items, room/building check ins/move outs, etc.)
  • Support the health and safety of the residential space through ongoing and scheduled checks
  • Must attend and actively engage in learning during all education & development sessions:Education & Development is an ongoing process starting with signing student leader agreement in April 2026 continuing through end of May 2027 including all team gatherings, one on one meetings with CD/GSA, community team meetings, and divisional and institutional sessions
